Lets start by looking at college requirements Most universities require 4 semesters of a foreign language for a B.A. degree.
Ivy League schools like Harvard and Stanford require even more 6-8 semesters or more.
Universities require high school students to have completed 2 years of a foreign language or 1 year and an approved advanced class.
In the Job Market Many applications for employment ask if the applicant is bilingual. The next thing that they want to know is can you speak Spanish.

Can you name some states where knowing Spanish would be a requirement? Some of the most interesting bilingual Spanish jobs are: 1. Teachers - approximately $46,000 per year 2. Translators- pays $40,000 - $52,000 per year 3. Customer representative - median rate is $20 an hour 4. Interpreters - $35,000 - $45,000 per year 5. Risk Manager - $99,800 per year 6. Writers - $35,000 - $100,000 per year or more 7. Court reporter - earns $400 a day 8. Research analyst - $84,000 per year 9. Wealth Manager - $70,000 a year 10. Investment banker - $88,000 per year
What about the DINERO? According to Salary.com, bilingual pay differentials range between 5 and 20 percent per hour more than the position's base rate. According to Californias Department of Personnel Administration website, government workers who hold bilingual positions earn an extra $.58 an hour. Employees in Washington County, Ore. in bilingual positions earn an extra $30 per pay period. A provision of the 2005 Defense Authorization Act ensures that federal government employees can earn up to an extra $1,000 in monthly proficiency pay for bilingual active-duty military personnel. Civilians may earn special pay up to 5 percent of their base salary.
