Abstract
Background. Early breastfeeding (EBF) within first hour of life is considered as
indicator of successful breastfeeding. Inadequate knowledge or inappropriate practice
of breastfeeding may lead to EBF failure. The EBF in Pupuk Kaltim Hospital, Bontang,
East Kalimantan is a new program, started in the last 2013 for newborn who delivered
by cesarean section and spontaneous delivery.
Objective. To describe the knowledge, attitude and practices regarding EBF among
feeding mother in Pupuk Kaltim Hospital, Bontang.
Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted among mother delivered vaginal
spontaneous delivery at Pupuk Kaltim Hospital, Bontang, East Kalimantan on January
to February 2014. Breastfeeding knowledge and attitude were assessed using self-
administered questionnaire. Early breastfeeding was defined as breastfeeding within
first hour after delivery for well newborn. The newborn outcomes were noted from
regaining heart rate, oxygen saturation and temperature.
Result.s During period, 54 newborn delivered spontaneously and 2 babies were
excluded due to asphyxia. About 46.3% mother had high education level and 50% from
senior high school. They had good knowledge criteria (85.1%) and good attitude (90.6%)
for EBF. Mean time for successful EBF was 31.4 minute. Oxygen saturation in 1,5,10
minute were 73.28%, 79.41%, 84.22% respectively. Mean axillary temperature in 1,
5,10,15,60 minute were 36.0

Conclusion. Our institution is successfully applied EBF due to high educated mother
and good knowledge, attitude and practice regarding early breastfeeding. The success
breastfeeding gives good outcome for babies.
