June 2014
Dear Parents,
The warm weather appears to be here to stay. Please re-
member to put sunscreen on your child in the morning
before school. They are outside for 40 minutes for recess
and we will be having phys ed outside more frequently
now that the weather has warmed up. Many students are
wearing sandals to school. If so, please send socks to
school with your child so when they wear their indoor run-
ning shoes, they will not get blisters.
In Science and Health, we have received our butterfly
larva. The students are enjoying watching them change
and grow. They have formed a chrysalis and are at the
pupa stage. Once they have become butterflies we will
let them go.
As the school year draws to a close, I want to remind you
to continue to have your child read to you so they dont
slip a reading level over the summer. Also, have your child
help you with mathematical situations including time,
money, adding and subtracting.
If students dont practice these skills over the summer, it
will make it harder to catch up by September. It only
takes a few minutes out of your day to work with your
child. It is truly a great investment of your time.
Enjoy your summer!
Regards,
Mrs. Glasgow
Reading
I have completed doing a DRA
with all of the students in the class.
Continue to read with your child
and have them retell the story us-
ing details and words from the sto-
ry in sequential order and include
character or place names. When
figuring out unknown words, ask
your child if their choice of words
make sense. If not, try another
strategy to figure out the word.
Ask your child about chunky mon-
key or skippy frog, as these are
strategies to help figure out un-
known words.
Writing
We have finished our unit on Ex-
planation writing. Next we will
spend time reviewing some of the
other forms of writing we have
learned during the year. A great
idea to keep your child writing is
to keep a summer journal for your
child to write in. Remind your child
that their sentences should have
capitals, spaces and punctuation
and their sentences should make
sense.
Math
We are currently working on time
to the hour and half hour. Stu-
dents typically struggle with draw-
ing clock hands with the hour
hand shorter than the minute
hand. Next we will be working on
mass and capacity and will end
the year with a review of some of
the concepts that have been
taught.
