Ter m 2, Week 9, 2 Jul y, 2014

Dear Parents and Caregivers

It has been a busy term and one where the impact of buildings and grounds works
has been significant. However, it has also been very exciting and positive to see so
much happening. The grounds work is planned to be finished before the start of Term
3, with the exception of the rubber matting under the adventure playground, which
will come part way into Term 3.

Thank you to the forty people who came to the Consultation Evening, giving input
into the schools Strategic Plan, last Thursday evening. We did have over seventy say
they were coming, and missed the input of those who didnt make it. However, the
people there were fantastic, and the Board is now collating all the input into a
document, and will sift through everything to identify the key points. In Term 3, we will
use Survey Monkey to go to the wider community for further input, and then work
towards completing the plan.

Congratulations to all our students who represented Riverview School in the
Inter-School Cross Country last Tuesday. Our school did very well in a very
competitive event and we are proud of their achievements. It was unfortunate that
the Junior Inter-School event was cancelled; however, we support the fact that the
Bay of Islands International Academy had to make a call based on the forecast that
morning.

This Friday is the final day of Term 2. Students in Years 4, 5, and 6 will bring home their
mid-year report, so please check for these.

I wish you all a happy and safe holiday period and we look forward to children
returning to school on Monday 21 July.

Celebrating Matariki with Room 9

My favourite part of Matariki was paper weaving. I accidentally cut the fold that held the kete
together, so I got a little purse bag. My kete was dark blue and light blue. I had one handle that was
woven with the blues. We made the kete with Mr Kirkland. We did rakau sticks with Ms Stone. In Room 12,
with Mrs Josephs, we did song writing and, with Mrs Heihei, we made a musical instrument called a hue.
We made the hue out of clay. After all the activities, Room 9 had to host the assembly. We all showed
with the classes what we had learnt and made.

On Monday, the Middle Syndicate celebrated Matariki. We were put into groups. Oli, Ben, Sam, Levi,
Shaie, Aleena, and I went to the Harko Brown workshop. We made putiputi and the teacher sang
making a putiputi for my girlfriend. It was funny. Then we made a hue with Mrs Heihei. Then we wrote
songs. It was an awesome day. I felt happy.

On Monday the Middle Syndicate celebrated the Matariki New Year. First, I did rakau with Ms Stone
and it was fun. Next, I did paper weaving with Mr Kirkland. I wanted to do a fish but I did a bag
instead. After morning tea, I went to Room 10 and made a clay wind instrument. And, lastly, I went to
Room 12 to do song writing. I felt happy because I enjoyed the day.

Matariki, Matariki, youre a star, because youre amazing just the way you are.
Matariki, Matariki, you can shine so bright, like a diamond in the sky.
