CIV521: Advanced Foundation Engineering

Due: 29/6 /2014 HW # 3 O. S. Mughieda

Summer A 2014

It is required to design one of the reinforced concrete combined footings of a tall structure that
will support three columns spaced so that they form two equal spans 6.0 m each and two
cantilever ends 2.0 m each. from left to right, column loads and moments (normal service
loading) are given below:

First Column 3000 kN 600 kN.m anti clockwise
Second Column 2000 kN 800 kN.m anti clockwise
Third Column 4000 kN 1200 kN.m clockwise

The thickness and unit weight of the footing may be assumed as 1.0 m and 24 kN/m
3

respectively.

Rectangular Footing
Determine the required width of a rectangular footing supporting the given loads assuming the
allowable bearing capacity of the soil (q
a
) may be taken equal to 300 kN/m
2
for normal service
loading. Follow Beam on Elastic Foundation Method (Winkler Method) and plot soil
pressure, shear and moment diagrams. Use the formula (k =36q
a
) to approximate the coefficient
of subgrade reaction. Column loads may be consider as concentrated forces.

Compare the results with the results of Rigid Method of HW2 and comment on it.
