These topologies use medium access control protocol, which is basically a protocol for broad cost type topologies. Another protocol used for a bus-based LAN is toen passing scheme. The tree topology is a generali!ation of bus topology. "edia consists of number of branches without loops. The tree layout starts at a point called head end. #ach of this cable has further branches. All the stations on the tree can receive transmitted. $ata in the form of fi%ed si!ed frames. The frame contains control information and destination address. Ring Topology: A ring is formed by lining a number of repeaters using uni-directional communication lins. &t is in the form of a loop. 'tation is connected to through a repeater.
&t receives the data on the incoming lin and copies them to the outgoing lin. Page 2 of 3 Study Material Computer Networks LAN Topologies Prepared By Mrs. D. Neema Dev Bobeea Sessio No buffers in the repeaters. $ata circulates around the ring in only one direction. Working Principles: $ata is transmitted in the form of frames. After transmission, a frame completes one full circulates around the ring. The station address, then receives it, otherwise it ignores the frame. &t is used in Toen (ing LANs and )$$&. Star Topology: &n star topology, each station is connected to a central switch called a star coupler or a hub. 'tation is directly lined with the central hub through two e%clusive communication lins, one for transmission in each direction. *entral coupler node can operate in the broad cast mode. This arrangement maes a star in to a bus topology. It can act as a switch. Star topology is widely used in current Ethernet LANs. Page 3 of 3
