Imago7 / Imago7 1. Asmir Begovic started his career at Portsmouths youth acadamy in 2003 but he made his debut in May 2009. In February 2010, he was sold to Stoke City and started as the No. 1 goalie in the 2011-12 season. Last season, he earned Stokes Player of the Year award.
Begovic played for Canada in the U-20 2007 World Cup and accepted two seperate call ups from the Canada team including a qualifier vs. Jamaica. In September 2009, he changed his mind and decided to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina and made his debut in the 92nd minute against Estonia. Since the Euro 2012 campaign, he is Bosnia and Herzegovinas No. 1 goalkeeper. Begovic has been voted the 2012 Bosnian Footballer of the Year. In November 2013, he became the fifth goalkeeper to score a goal in the Premier League, as he scored a clearance from his own penalty area in the 1-1 draw with Southampton after just 13 seconds.
Former Stoke City and England national goalkeeper Gordon Banks spoke of Begovic with great optimism.
"As for Asmir, first of all let me say he's had a great season and I've said to a lot of people that he's definitely up there now with the top three goalkeepers in this country," Begovic said. "If he plays as well in the World Cup as he does for Stoke City, then he'll do a terrific job out there."
