Semester 2 Assignment 2 2013 This assignment is worth 7.5% of the assessment for MATH3061. Your answers should be stapled in a folder and delivered to the School of Mathematics and Statistics Student Oce, Carslaw 520, before 3pm on Thursday 24 October 2013. Your signature will be required when you hand your assignment in. It covers material from the Toplogy part of the unit, lectures in weeks 7 10 and Tutorials 7,8 and 9. A cover sheet (available from the MATH3061 web page) must be attached to the front cover of your assignment, inside the folder. No assignment will be marked without a completed cover sheet attached. (1) Sketch plane models and write down words representing: a) # 2 Kb# 2 T b) # 2 RP 2 # 3 T (2) Show that # 2 RP 2 Kb. (3) Express Kb#RP 2 #T#RP 2 # 2 Kb#T in normal form. (4) Express the surface # 2 Kb in ve distinct ways (ignoring the order) in the form ABCD, where A, B, C, D are basic surfaces. (5) Calculate the Euler characteristic of A#D, Mb#D, T#D, Kb#D and D#RP 2 . Does the above list contain two homeomorphic surfaces? Justify your answer.
