SKILL 33 Pin Care, External Fixation Device

EQUIPMENT DOCUMENTATION
Cotton-tipped applicators, sterile 1. Time procedure performed and cleansing solution used.
Prescribed cleansing solution
2. Condition of pin sites.
Gloves, sterile

PROCEDURE
1. Gather equipment. Promotes organization and effi-
ciency.
2. Wash hands. Reduces transmission of microorganisms.
3. Explain procedure to child and family. Enhances cooper-
ation and participation and reduces anxiety and fear.
4. Open applicators and cleansing solution.
5. Put on sterile gloves. Reduces the transmission of
microorganisms and protects the nurse from contact
with body fluids.
6. Cleanse the site.
a. Dip applicator in cleansing solution.
b. Cleanse each site using a circular motion. Cleanse
from the pin site outward. Cleans from least contami-
nated to most contaminated area.
c. Use a new applicator for each pin site. Reduces the
transmission of microorganisms.
7. Dispose of applicators in an appropriate container.
8. Remove and dispose of gloves. Wash hands. Reduces
transmission of microorganisms.
