Modified Lesson Plan Template
Learning Goal: Students will use the formulas for the perimeter and are of rectangles to solve
real-world problems.
Core Curriculum Standards: 4.MD.3 Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in
...mathematical problems.
Procedure:
I will introduce the lesson by saying, "Today we are going to work with area and perimeter. Who
can explain to me what perimeter and area is?" After hearing the students answers, giving them
praise for their responses, I will explain that area is length times the width and the perimeter is
adding all of the sides of a shape and will then demonstrate it on the white board. I will then
draw a rectangle on the board, labeling its length as 5 inches and the width as 7 inches. I will
then asked the class, how would I find the area and the perimeter, demonstrating the math on the
board.
Then I will model how to construct a rectangle using Cheez its and then explain that each side of
a Cheez it is worth one inch. Then I will model how to find the perimeter and the area of the
rectangle I created.
Then I will create another rectangle for guided practice and the students will use their white
boards to create the shape to find the area and perimeter. Then the class will work independently
to complete area and perimeter problems. After, students will be selected to come to the board to
write the area and the perimeter. Then the students will create rectangles for their shoulder buddy
to figure out the area and the perimeter of each others.
Lesson Activity: The students will observe the teacher in constructing shapes to find the area
and perimeter. They will then do guided practice problems for area and perimeter. Then the
students will use Cheez-Its on their own to create different sizes of rectangles for independent
practice. Students will then create different rectangles for their shouldar buddies to find the area
and perimeter. As a closing activity, students will define and write examples of area and
perimeter.
Assessment:. Then the students will use their white boards to work on guided practice problems
to show area and perimeter along with the teacher. Afterwards, they will work independently to
complete a worksheet using their Cheez its. Students will be called to the board to show their
work for the independent problems.
Technology: The laptop and the Ladibug will be used to the lesson to project the Cheez-it
activity.
Materials: The students will have bags of Cheez-its, graphing paper, and their pencils.
