Sydney Harbour Bridge is a steel arch bridge.

It is a bridge that crosses the


Harbour and it is also a major landmark in Sydney. It joins the city of Sydney
with the north shore of the Harbour.

Purpose:
The Bridge allows people to cross from one side of the Harbour to the other.
People can travel across by foot, in cars and other vehicles, by bicycle and even
by train.

Features / Appearance:
The Bridge is also nicknamed The Coat hanger because of the big arch at the
top. It is made of so much steel that it is similar to the area of 60 football
fields. There are 3 main roads that use the Bridge to cross over the Harbour.
The roadway is held up by the arch and not by the stone pylons.

Interesting Facts:
The Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened on the 19
th
of March in 1932. Before
Premier Lang of Sydney could cut the ribbon a man in a soldiers uniform rode
up on a horse, cutting the ribbon with his sword. They had to tie the ribbon
back together with a knot so that the Premier could cut it to officially open the
Bridge. Today people can climb into one of the pylons for a view of the bridge
and the harbour. Since 1999 groups of people are taken on climbs to the top of
the arch.
