Ethernet over SONET Transport for Triple Play Services

IPTV/Triple Play Service Transport

Many LECs, and other network operators, are deploying
IP-based Television services (IPTV) to complete the
triple play delivery of voice, video and data services
to their residential subscribers. In addition to providing
an important new source of revenues, IPTV enables
established telephone companies to compete more
effectively with cable MSOs.
The deployment of IPTV is having a significant impact
on the critical technologies and systems between the
access network and the head-end. For one, new
IP-based head-end and access network equipment
utilizes gigabit Ethernet for network connectivity. At
the same time, Video on Demand (VoD) and HDTV
can easily overwhelm existing network capacity. Lastly,
packet loss and delay can result in poor service quality
and customer dissatisfaction.
Ethernet Transport Solutions
Force10 Networks addresses these challenges with a
range of products that unify L2 Ethernet switching
and Ethernet over SONET transport. Optimized for
head-end, central office and outside plant (OSP)
environments, Force10s highly-scalable Traverse

and
TraverseEdge

platforms enable the migration to a high-

capacity, packet-optimized architecture that efficiently
and reliably transports Ethernet traffic at up to 10 GbE
rates. Leveraging the advantages of next generation
SONET/SDH with carrier Ethernet, Force10s products
ensure guaranteed bandwidth with ultra-low latency
and jitter an essential requirement for video transport.
By supporting a variety of service delivery options such
as VLAN switching and advanced traffic management,
Force10s products support all video distribution
architectures including broadcast, multicast IPTV
and unicast VoD.
The Traverse and TraverseEdge platforms are comple-
mented by Force10's C-Series platform, which can be
deployed in the head-end to deliver scalable multicast
switching and routing functionality. In addition, the
C-Series and S-Series can be deployed in applications
requiring high-density, low-cost native Ethernet
aggregation and transport for triple play services.
