Reliance Industries Limited's Hazira unit uses positive material identification (PMI) to check materials daily to ensure the right materials are used in the right places. Over the past 5 years, PMI has checked over 10,000 spots, detecting wrong materials in 1,000 cases and mix-ups in 300 cases. This has helped avoid potential process safety incidents. The current PMI instrument is 5 years old, showing wear and providing intermittent erratic readings after being repaired twice in the past 2 years. A new generation instrument is needed that can detect more critical elements as the current model is obsolete and could break down without a replacement. Approval is sought to procure a new PMI instrument for approximately Rs. 12 l

21/07/2010 Approval Note Subject: Procurement of Ne PMI (Positive Material Identifcation) instrument Positive material identification has been widely implemented for last 5 years across the Hazira complex. The following materials are being checked on daily basis, so as to ensure that right material is going in to right place. ll new materials being received in !eneral "tores. ll new materials being received in Pro#ect "tores. ll new materials used in fabrication stage. $hecking of $ritical existing installations. %aterials lying in stock at Pro#ect "tores. %aterials lying in stock at !eneral "tores. &ast $hance 'nspection of critical assemblies. 'n past, we had experienced P"% incidents on account of wrong materials. .sing the rigorous P%', many potential P"% incidents could be avoided. . t present, '/$ Team is using 0iton 1&T-232 instrument for P%' check, which was procured in 4ct-5))5 thro6 7P$! route under PT* pro#ect. This instrument has been extensively used for last 5 years, showing signs of wear / tear and intermittent erratic readings. 't has been repaired twice during last * years.
