The Lord tells Arjuna that he has taught two paths - the path of knowledge for the wise and the path of selfless action for those inclined towards action. Both paths lead to liberation and fulfillment. One cannot attain knowledge without pure action, nor liberation without knowledge. While a renunciant who abandons action but whose mind dwells on sense objects is hypocritical, one who acts without desiring the fruits of action and whose mind dwells in the self attains the supreme. Such a wise person who acts for the welfare of others and to guide them, without attachment to the fruits, attains liberation from the bonds of action.
