Assignment # 2 Solution

Problem 1.3:
a) Beam properties:
width (b) = 350 mm = 0.350 m
depth (h) = 700 mm = 0.700 m
unit weight (w) = 24 kN/m3
Load analysis:
self-weight = b x h x w = 0.350 x 0.700 x 24 = 5.9 kN/m

D.L 6.0 kN / m
Live load (L.L) = 15.0 kN/m

Also,

Therefore, Total Load (w) = D.L + L.L = 6.0 +15.0 = 21.0 kN/m
For, simply supported beam:

M S = 168 kN m
b)
wf = 1.25DL + 1.5LL (NBC 2005 Table 4.1.3.2)
wf = 1.25(6.0) + 1.5(15.0) = 30.0 kN

wf l 2

(30.0) (8.0)

M f = 240.0 kN m

Problem 1.4:
a) DL = 10.0kPa
LL = 5.0kPa
Load on beam B1:
Tributary width (s) = 3.0m

wf = (1.25DL + 1.5LL) s = (1.25 10.0 + 1.5 5.0) 3.0 = 60 kN m

Load on girder G1:
Tributary width (s) = 8m
wf = (1.25DL + 1.5LL) s = (1.25 10.0 + 1.5 5.0) 8.0 = 160 kN/m
b)
Tributary area for the column C1 = A = 8m 9m = 72 m2
Factored Axial Load:
Pf = (1.25DL + 1.5LL) A = (1.25 10.0 + 1.5 5.0) (72.0) = 1, 440 Kn

Problem 1.5:
Cross sectional area = 1100 x 100 + 300 x 600 = 290,000 mm2 = 0.29 m2
Unit weight (w) = 24.0 kN/m3
Beam self-weight:

w = A w = 0.29 24.0 = 6.96 7.0 kN / m

w = 7.0 kN / m
