1 Sum m ary
1.1 General
The vacuum circuit-breakers of type VD 4 on w ith-
draw able parts for 36 kV or 40.5 kV rated voltage
are intended for indoor installation in air-insulated
sw itchgear system s. Their sw itching capacity is
sufficient to handle any conditions arising from
sw itching of equipm ent and system com ponents
under norm al operating and fault conditions,
particularly short-circuits, w ithin the param eters of
their technical data.
Vacuum circuit-breakers have particular ad-
vantages for use in netw orks w here there is a high
sw itching frequency in the w orking current range
and/or w here a certain num ber of short-circuit
breaking operations are expected. Type VD 4
vacuum circuit-breakers are suitable for auto-
reclosing, and have exceptionally high operating
reliability and long life.
The vacuum circuit-breakers designed in colum n
form , are supplied as w ithdraw able m odules. Their
basic structure is show n in figures 3/1 and 3/2.

3 Structure and function
3.1 Structure of the breaker poles
(Figures 3/1, 3/2 und 3/6)
The 36 kV and 40.5 kV circuit-breakers of type VD 4
are designed as w ithdraw able units.
The poles, w hich are constructed in colum n form ,
are m ounted on a torsionally rigid enclosure sub-
structure w ith rollers. The live parts of the breaker
poles are located in the insulating m aterial pole
tubes 57.8 and protected from im pacts and other
external influences.
W ith the breaker closed, the current path leads
from the upper contact arm 57.1 and a cham ber
holder fixed in the pole tube to the fixed contact
58.2 in the vacuum interrupter 58, then via the
m oving contact 58.3 and roller contact to the
low er contact arm 57.2. The sw itching m otion is
effected by m eans of the insulated coupling rod
w ith internal contact force springs.
The basic structure of a vacuum interrupter is
explained in figure 3/6.
3.2 Structure of the breaker operating mechanism
(Figures 3/3, 3/4, 6/1 to 6/5, 7/5 to 7/8)
The operating m echanism located in the housing
substructure is of the stored-energy spring type
and acts on the three breaker poles. The necessary
operating energy is stored ready for activation by
charging the spring energy storage m echanism .
The stored-energy spring m echanism essentially
consists of drum 55.33 containing the spiral spring,
the charging system , the latching and operating
m echanism and the linkages w hich transm it the
force to the breaker poles. In addition, there are
supplem entary com ponents such as the charging
m otor, releases, auxiliary sw itches and the controls
and instrum ents.
The operating m echanism is fundam entally suitable
for autoreclosing and, due to the short charging
tim es, also for m ulti-shot autoreclosing.
The operating m echanism is norm ally fitted w ith a
charging m otor. There is also a facility for charging
the stored energy spring m anually.
There is one rating plate 55.7 w ith the m ain data of
the sw itch equipm ent on front cover plate left hand
side 50.7, and another on breaker m echanism
housing.
The basic version of the stored-energy spring
m echnism is fitted w ith the follow ing auxiliary
equipm ent:
Shunt release O FF Y2
Five-pole auxiliary sw itch S4 for annunciation
purposes
Auxiliary sw itch S7 for fault annunciation
O N -O FF operating shaft 54
M echanical sw itch position indicator 55.4
C harging condition indicator 55.8 for the spring
energy store
M echanical operating cycle counter 55.5.
The following additional equipment can be
installed:
B locking m agnet Y0 on w ithdraw able part
B locking m agnet Y1 w ith auxiliary sw itch S2
Shunt release O N Y3
Second shunt release O FF Y9
Indirect overcurrent release Y7
U ndervoltage release Y4
Five-pole auxiliary sw itches S3 and S5
C harging m otor M 0
Five-pole auxiliary sw itch S1 to sw itch the
charging m otor
Anti-pum ping relay K0.
3.2.1 Releases, blocking magnet and auxiliary switches
(Figures 3/3, 6/2, 7/7 and 7/8)
The releases and the blocking m agnet are
m ounted at the bottom of the stored-energy spring
m echanism .
The allocation of the auxiliary sw itches can be seen
in the w iring diagram of figure 7/8.
The five-pole auxiliary sw itch S1 is operated by the
charging condition indicator 55.8. It controls the
charging m otor M 0, serves as an electrical interlock
for shunt release O N Y3 w hen the spring energy
storage m echanism is not sufficiently charged, and
also provides an electrical sw itching readiness
signal.
O peration of the five-pole auxiliary sw itches S3, S4
and S5 is dependent on the sw itching position of
the circuit-breaker.
Auxiliary sw itch S3 interrupts the circuit of the op-
tional additional shunt release O FF Y9 w ith the
circuit-breaker in the open position, and the circuits
of shunt release O N Y3 and the optional blocking
m agnet Y1 w ith the circuit-breaker in the closed
position. There is one further N O C for other
purposes.
11
Auxiliary sw itch S4 interrupts the circuit of shunt
release O FF Y2 w ith the circuit-breaker in the open
position. O ne further N O C and three N C C s are
available for annunciation, control and interlock
purposes.
Auxiliary sw itch S5 can be optionally designed w ith
any possible com bination of contacts from five
N O C s to five N C C s. Its contacts are available for
any required control, annunciation or interlock
functions. The auxiliary sw itch is norm ally
configured as show n in figure 7/8.
The single pole auxiliary sw itch S7 (fleeting contact
tim e 30 m s) serves to provide a fault signal
("breaker released"). W ith rem ote control, the
auxiliary sw itch is necessarily operated via:
Shunt release O FF Y2 or
Shunt release O FF Y9 or
U ndervoltage release Y4 or
Indirect overcurrent release Y7.
Note:
1.Shunt releases O FF (Y2) and O N (Y3) are
exclusively provided for opening and closing in
norm al operation. For safety breaking
operations, the second shunt release O FF (Y9)
m ust be used, in m ost cases w ith a separate
control voltage supply.
These three releases are of the solenoid type
and suitable for a large num ber of operating
cycles.
2.The undervoltage release (Y4) and/or indirect
overcurrent release (Y7) are pure safety and
protection releases and m ust not be used for
sw itching in norm al operation.
3.3 Function
3.3.1 Charging of the spring energy store
(Figures 3/3, 6/2, 6/6 and 7/8)
To provide the necessary m otive energy, the spring
energy storage m echanism is charged via chain
55.34 fitted w ith ratchet w heel 55.35, either
autom atically by a charging m otor or by hand in a
vertical pum ping action w ith charging lever 128.
The current charging condition is show n at
charging condition indicator 55.8
As a precondition for an autoreclosing sequence,
the operating m echanism is either (re-)charged
after a closing operation autom atically by the
charging m otor, or it requires (re-)charging by hand
if the operating m echanism is of the m anual type.
3.3.2 Closing procedure
(Figures 3/4, 3/6, 6/1, 6/3 and 7/7)
The closing process is initiated m anually by the
double bit key 145 and the O N -O FF operating shaft
54, or electrically by activation of shunt release Y3.
The release m echanism then perm its drive shaft 55.30
to be rotated by the (previously) charged spiral spring.
The m oving contact 58.3 in vacuum interrupter 58 is
m oved until the contacts touch by cam disk and further
kinem atic links. In the further sequence of m otion,
spring arrangem ent is tensioned and the appropriate
am ount of contact force thus applied. The available
overtravel is higher than the m axim um value of
contact erosion during lifetim e of the interrupter.
D uring the closing process, opening springs are
sim ultaneously tensioned.
3.3.3 Opening procedure
(Figures 3/3, 3/6, 6/3 and 7/7)
The opening procedure is initiated m anually by the
double bit key 145 and the O N -O FF operating shaft
54, or electrically by activation of one of the
releases Y2, Y4, Y7 or Y9. O bserve the notes in
section 3.2.1 on controlof the releases. R elease
m echanism then perm its drive shaft 55.30 to be
turned further by the spring energy storage
m echanism , w hich is still sufficiently charged. The
opening spring, w hich is thus released, m oves the
contact 58.3 into the open position at a defined speed.
3.3.4 Autoreclosing sequence
An O FF-O N or O FF-O N -O FF autoreclosing se-
quence is activated and checked by the protection
system . It is necessary for the spiral spring in the
operating m echanism to be in the (re-)charged
condition, w ith the circuit-breaker in the closed
position. The (re-)charging process is carried out
autom atically after closing of the breaker on
breakers w ith m otor charging m echanism s, but
m ust be carried out m anually on breakers w ithout
charging m otors (or w hen the charging m otor has
broken dow n). O pening of the breaker is also
possible during the (re-)charging process, but sub-
sequent closing of the breaker is how ever blocked
until the charging process has been com pleted.
3.3.5 Quenching principle of the vacuum interrupter
D ue to the extrem ely low static interrupter cham ber
pressure of 10
-4
to 10
-8
m bar, only a relatively sm all
contact gap is required to achieve a high dielectric
strength. The arc is extinguished on one of the first
natural current zeros.
D ue to the sm all contact gap and the high con-
ductivity of the m etal vapour plasm a, the arc drop
voltage, and additionally, due to the short arcing
tim e, the associated arc energy, are extrem ely low ,
w hich has advantageous effects on the life of the
contacts and thus on that of the vacuum
interrupters.

7 M aintenance
M aintenance serves to ensure trouble-free
operation and achive the longest possible
w orking life of the sw itchgear. In accordance w ith
D IN 31 051 / IEC 61208 it com prises the follow ing
closely related activities:
Inspection: D eterm ination of the actual condition
Servicing: M easures to m aintain the specified
condition
Repair: M easures to restore the specified
condition.
7.1 General
(Figure 7/5)
Vacuum circuit-breakers are characterized by their
sim ple and robust construction. They have a long
life expectancy. Their operating m echanism s have
a low m aintenance requirem ent, and the
interrupters are m aintenance-free during their
w orking life. There is no adverse effect on the
vacuum , even from frequent sw itching of operating
and short-circuit currents.
The servicing intervals and scope are determ ined
by environm ental influences, the sw itching
sequences and num ber of short-circuit breaking
operations.
W ith carefully perform ed inspections and servicing
w ork, and under norm al operating conditions, the
circuit-breakers, depending on the type, have a
service life of up to 20,000 operating cycles and m ore.
Note:
The follow ing m ust be observed for all m aintenance
w ork:
The relevant specifications in section 1.2.2
N otes on safety at w ork in section 6.1
Standards and specifications in the country of
installation.
M aintenance w ork m ay only be perform ed by fully
trained personnel, observing all the relevant safety
regulations. It is recom m ended that AB B C alor
Em ag after-sales service personnel should be
called in, at least during the perform ance of
servicing and repair w ork.
W hile the w ork is in progress, all auxiliary voltage
sources m ust also be disconnected and secured to
prevent reconnection.
Note:
In order to prevent accidents (particularly injury
to hands!) extrem e care should be taken during
all repair w ork on the operating m echanism ,
especially w ith front cover plates 50.6 and 50.7
rem oved.
The spiral spring in the spring energy strage
m echanism , for instance, retains a basic tension
w hich is independent of the charging and
discharging processes during sw itching, so as to
ensure correct function. This spring energy can be
inadvertently released if w ork is perform ed
incorrectly on the spring m echanism !
7.2 Inspection and functional testing
7.2.1 Switching devices in general
The proper condition of the sw itching device is to
be verified by regular inspection.
U nder norm al operating conditions, testing by a
qualified personnel is to be perform ed at least every
4 years (in accordance w ith VB G 4 standard).
In unusual operating conditions (including adverse
clim atic conditions) and/or special environm ental
pollutions (e.g. heavy contam ination and aggressi-
ve atm osphere), inspection m ay also be necessary
at shorter intervals.
Inspection at fixed intervals m ay be w aived if the
sw itchgear is perm anently m onitored by a qualified
personnel.
The checks first and forem ost com prise visual
exam ination for contam ination, corrosion, m oisture
and discharge phenom ena.
If an incorrect condition is found, appropriate
servicing m easures are to initiated.
7.2.2 Stored-energy spring mechanism
(Figures 7/6 and 7/7)
Functional testing of the operating m echanism is to
be perform ed:
after 5000 operating cycles or
during servicing w ork as set out in 7.2.1.
Prior to functional testing, sw itch the breaker off
and isolate the outgoing feeder.
Note:
Isolate and secure the w orking area in accordance
w ith the safety regulations specified by D IN VD E/
IEC .
Scope of functional testing:
Perform several sw itching operations under no
load, above all w ith circuit-breakers seldom
operated in norm al service.
Sw itch off the charging m otor (if fitted) and
discharge the spring m echanism by O N /O FF
sw itching operations.
Exam ine visual the condition of the lubrication on
rotary bearings, sliding surfaces, etc.
C heck the proper m echanical/electrical se-
quence of the individual functions.
7.2.3 Checking auxiliary s witch s ettings on with-
drawable part
(Figures 6/4, 6/6, 7/6 to 7/8)
C om pliance w ith the interlock conditions in the
areas of the test/disconnected position and the
service position is ensured by auxiliary sw itches
S8 and S9, located in the breaker housing.
22
In test operations, the w ithdraw able part m ust be
m oved by hand w ith the crank 146 fitted.
1.Settings in the area of the test/disconnected
position
M ove the w ithdraw able part out of the test/
disconnected position tow ards the service
position w ith a few turns of the crank.
Slow ly m ove the w ithdraw able part back to

the hand crank has a rem aining angle of + 60
of turn to reach the stop.
Slow ly insert the w ithdraw able part from the
test/disconnected position tow ards the
service position until auxiliary sw itch S8 just
operates.
In this position, it m ust still just be possible to
m ove closing push rod 55.2. For this test, the
function of the blocking m agnet Y0 (if fitted)
m ust be deactivated m anually.
This condition ensures that the electrical
interlock takes effect before the m echanical
interlock in the m otion sequence involved.
2. Settings in the area of the service position
M ove the w ithdraw able part out of the lim it
position tow ards the test/disconnected
position w ith a few turns of the crank.

2.The w ithdraw able part m ust only be m ovable
from the service position into the test/
disconnected position w ith the circuit-breaker
open.
C heck this condition as follow s:
W ith the circuit-breaker closed, w ithdraw al
m ovem ent of the w ithdraw able part m ust be
blocked after only half a turn of the crank in
anti-clockw ise direction.
3.C losing of the circuit-breaker m ust only be
possible w hen the w ithdraw able part is in the
defined test/disconnected position or service
position.
The control w iring plug 10.2 m ust previously
have been inserted.
C heck this condition as follow s:
It m ust not be possible to close the circuit-
breaker w ith the w ithdraw able part in any
position betw een the test/disconnected
position and the service position.
Enabling of sw itching w hen the w ithdraw able
part m oves into the service position is
effected electrically by operation of auxiliary
sw itch S9 in the breaker housing.
For m otion into the test/disconnected
position, the sam e enabling conditions apply
analogously, in this case by m eans of auxiliary
sw itch S8 in the breaker housing.
4.It m ust only be possible to open the circuit-
breaker (m anually) w hen the w ithdraw able part
is in the service position or test/disconnected
position and the control voltage has failed.

m aintenance-free up to reaching the perm issible
num ber of vacuum interrupter operating cycles in
accordance w ith section 2.4.
C hecking of the vacuum is only necessary w hen
there is good cause to suspect that force applied
externally to a pole tube has caused dam age to the
vacuum interrupter inside.
If the pole tube is dam aged or destroyed, it m ay be
necessary to replace the com plete breaker pole.
The w orking life of the vacuum interrupter is defined
by the sum current lim it corresponding to the
equipm ent data in individual cases in accordance
w ith section 2.4:
W hen the sum current lim it is reached, the
com plete breaker poles are to be replaced.
W hen the perm issible num ber of m echanical
operating cycles (i.e. the num ber corresponding
to I

8 Application of the X-ray regulations
O ne of the physical properties of vacuum
insulations is the possibility of X-ray em issions
w hen the contact gap is open. The specified type
test perform ed by the Physikalisch-Technische
B undesanstalt (PTB ) in B runsw ick dem onstrates
that the local dosage output of 1 Sv/h at a
distance of 10 cm from the touchable surface is not
exceeded.
The results are as follow s:
The use of the vacuum interrupters at rated
voltage is com pletely safe.
The application of the rated pow er frequency
w ithstand voltage specified for the sw itching
devices by D IN VD E 0670 and IEC 60056 is
also safe.
H igher voltages than the rated pow er frequency
w ithstand voltage or D C test voltage specified in
D IN VD E or IEC standards m ust not be applied!
Fulfilm ent of the above requirem ent w ith the
vacuum interrupter in the open position is
dependent on m aintenance of the specified
distance betw een the contacts (w hich is
autom atically ensured w ith correct m echanism
function and force transm ission).
