Project Guide
Mrs. G. Angalaparameswari (ME)
Senior Lecturer / EEE
Objective of the project
• To model a Static Synchronous
Compensator (STATCOM) using
MATLAB SIMULINK for Reactive
Power Compensation and to test the
output for IEEE 6 bus test system.
Flexible AC Transmission
System
• A Flexible Alternating Current
Transmission System (FACTS) is an
alternating current transmission system
incorporating power electronic based and
other static Controllers to enhance
controllability and increase power transfer
capability.
Need for FACTS Devices
• Increases system security
• Control power so that it flows on the desired routes
• Increase loading capacity of transmission lines
• Prevent blackouts
• Improve generation productivity
• Effective use of upgrading / uprating

STATCOM

• A shunt-connected reactive-power
compensation device that is capable
of generating and/ or absorbing
reactive power.
• The output can be varied to control
the specific parameters of an electric
power system.
STATCOM - Single Line Diagram
Principle of operation
Advantages of STATCOM
• Dynamic voltage control in transmission and
distribution system.
• Reactive power can be varied.
• Quicker response.
• No switching Transient.
• Improvement in system stability.
