Humanity Is Love, Kindness and Social Intelligence

Christopher Peterson (a psychologist)

and Martin Seligman (a psychologist,
educator, and author of self-help
books), co-authored a handbook
entitled
Character
Strengths
and Virtues. In this handbook
they attempted to classify human
strengths and virtues (qualities).
Humanity is one of the six categories
(classifications) of human virtues.
According to the handbook, the six
classifications of human virtues
include: Wisdom and Knowledge,
Courage,
Humanity,
Justice,
Temperance and Transcendence.
From these six categories, humanity
is a virtue with a set of strengths
focused on tending and befriending
others. The three strengths
associated with humanity are love,
kindness, and social intelligence.

generosity, helpfulness and a general

desire to help people. And Social
intelligence describes the exclusively
human capacity to use very large
brains to effectively navigate and
negotiate complex social relationships
and environments. From this we
understand that to be human is to be
kind and love others.
Confucius, a Chinese thinker and social
philosopher of about 500 years before
the birth of Christ, describes humanity,
or jen, as a love of people saying if
you want to make a stand, help others
make a stand. The Confucian concept

of jen (Humanity) encompasses both

love and altruism (the fact of caring
about the needs and happiness of other
people more than your own). People
with the right humanity tends to give
and help others rather than to take
from others in selfish manner. And
finaly let me tell you one quotation by
a French writer and Feminist theorist,
Simone de Beauvoir, Any man who
has known real loves, real revolts,
real desires, and real will knows
quite well that he has no need of any
guarantee to be sure of his goals; their
certitude comes from his own drive.

Nicholas Humphrey, Psychologist

and professor at the London School
of Economics believes it is social
intelligence or the richness of our
qualitative life, rather than our
quantitative intelligence, that truly
makes humans what they are.
As a character strength of humanity,
love is a mutual feeling between two
people characterized by attachment,
comfort, and generally positive
feelings. Whereas the strength
kindness encompasses most related
terms that evoke feelings of altruism,

An Expedition to BaHru ()

PART V Success

Equipped with bravery and clarity

of his dreams, BaHru knew he has
ringed the first four bells out of his
Ten Sweet New Year Bells. The first
bell was a bell of love; the second bell
was a bell of belief, the third a bell of
clarity and the fourth bell was a bell
of bravery. He has now the wisdom
of love, belief, clarity and bravery.
He is brave enough to clearly achieve
his dreams with love and strong
self-belief. His next mission in the
expedition to self-mastery is to be
successful. Filled with courage,
BaHru has no more senses of
frustrations in his mind. Instead, he
has full courage to do what he wanted
to do in success. By ringing the fifth
bell the bell of success, BaHru is
darting to his world of success and
delight. With his success he will feel
delighted and with his delight he will
feel more courageous to do more
again and again.
BaHru remembered one of the
advices offered by Dr. Idris. Dr.
Idris is the fifth member of the team
of ten collaborative psychologists

who brought BaHru the birthday gift.

That gift was a toolkit for a conscious
life. On BaHrus tenth year birthday,
Dr. Idris, advised him about the
Psychology of Success. Now, with
his greater motivation and courage,
BaHru remembered the words of Dr.
Idris, My dearest BaHru, we are glad
to help you so that you will become
a successful person in the future.
By ringing the fifth bell the bell of
success, I am sure you will be a great
person who achieves his dreams and
who helps other people to achieve their
dreams. My boy, follow my little words
of success. Success is an achievement
of our clearly defined goals. Once
you succeed in one goal it is very
motivating to continue. The perfect
formula of successful people is deep
passion and commitment towards the
clearly set goals you want to achieve.
BaHru, thought, Okay, if I am going
to be a great creative writer and
thinker, it means that I have to love this
skill first. Then I have to set my goals
in milestones of successive success
lines. With these goals set perfectly,
I need to make greater commitment
and endeavor toward these goals. Of
course I have to read the great books of

the creative writers like that of our late

author, thinker, educator and painter
Beyene Haile and that of Margaret
Atwood, the distinguished Canadian
poet, novelist, literary critic, essayist,
and environmental activist.
BaHru continued his expedition
to BaHru. His desire is to find the
original, unspoiled and motivated
BaHru BaHru of great dreams.

In this column we are going to cover

a wide variety of topics including
but not limited to: Technology,
Education, Art, Culture, Humanity,
Enlightenment and Renaissance.
Following this, Werede Tareke,
Ghede Asrat, Michael Berhe,
Mahder and Desbele from Eritrea
Institute of Technology and Solomon
Habtemariam from St. Mary
Hospital expressed their impressions
and appreciations of CKC.

As a Kid I Used to Dream

On Thursday, March 06, 2014,

around seven oclock in the morning
I met a parent student named by
Merhawit around Expo. Both of us
were waiting for a Bus (A Service).
As we talked I come to know that
Merhawit is studying accounting in
College of Business and Economics
Halhale. By Parent Student I mean
someone who is a student and at the
same time a parent. For example if
our mothers and fathers While we
were waiting for the buses to come we
talked about early childhood dreams.
I asked her what her dreams were as
a kid and if she have achieved it yet.
Merhawit replied:
I dont remember exactly when
the time was. But, as a kid I used
to dream to be a great architect. An
architect uses his skills to design and
decorate buildings. Then when I finished school I joined to the Technical School and studied Surveying (a
field of study in Civil Engineering). I
would say I have achieved my childhood dreams. However, dreams never stop once you achieve one dream
another dream starts. Now I am
studying Accounting, to be a professional accountant which is my next
dream.
While taking care of her family as a
mother, Merhawit did not stop learning. She is also doing very now in her
studies. This is a very good example
that shows learning is for life and
dreams are continuous. To inspire
our reader kids, CKC is inviting parents and teachers to send us their
memories of childhood entitled, As a
Kid I Used to Dream

I would say to parents that we should

be simple friends to our kids. We should
take enough time to talk with them and
make necessary follow up in their daily
progress in educational, cultural, social
and spiritual consciousness. My advice
here is that we should as simple as the
kids. And when we talk to our kids it is
good if we use soft and comfortable words.
Speaking with anger and negativity
distrusts the mind of kids. Therefore it
is right and true to speak positively and
in a calm approach. And as per CKC,
I believe this program enhances the
relationship of Parents, students and
Teachers. Wider experiences of parenting
and learning are possible through CKC.
