About inventor Elisha Otis
Elisha Otis and his sons founded Otis
brothers and company. They made
everything that is used in elevators
today. Otis and his sons created the
counterweight and the guide rail in
elevators.
How elevators were operated
There is a revolving drum to wind
the rope that makes the elevator go up
and down. There is a hydraulic crane.
Hydraulic cranes are in hydraulic
elevators. Hydraulic elevators then
replaced steam elevators.
The first Otis elevator
The first elevator being demonstrated
was a freight elevator in the New York
Crystal Palace exposition in 1853. The
first elevator to be in a public place was in
1857 I t was also a freight elevator being
operated on at a department store.
How elevators changed our
lives
Elevators changed our lives in
many different ways. For example, if
elevators werent invented, we
wouldnt have the Sears Tower. We
wouldnt have any skyscrapers. We
wouldnt have certain landmarks.
