PIEZOELECTRIC ELEMENTS FOR ENERGY HARVESTING
(SOME USEFUL RELATIONSHIPS)

Voltage Generated by a piezoelement by 1 N Force acting parallel to the direction
of polarization.

V = [ g
33
x F x T ]
A
g
33
= Voltage Co-efficient of piezomaterial (Can be obtained fromproperty data sheet) (V-m/N)
T = Thickness of Element (meter). The thickness is thesame dimension across which the
polarization is doneand
F = Force Acting (N)
A = Area of piezoelement (m
2
) on which force is acting.
The figure shown above is for a disk shape. One can also use ring shape or plate shape.

Charge Generated by Piezoelement :
Q = C x V ; where C is capacitance of piezoelement (can be calculated from
geometrical dimensions and dielectric constant of the material).

V = Voltage generated (in Volts)
Q = Charge in Coulombs

Energy Generated by Piezoelement :
Energy Generated (Joules) = * C * (V)
2

Watts generated = Energy Generated (J) * No of Cycles per second (Frequency)

Some important Design Considerations:
1. Max compressive force acting on piezoelement not to exceed 4000 psi
2. Geometrical dimension required must be achievable or within range of production
3. You may consider using a number of elements in parallel for more wattage.
