Lesson Content
Objectives- What are you
teaching?
(Student-centered: What will
students know and be able to do
after this lesson? Include the
ABCDs of objectives: action,
behavior, condition, and degree of
mastery, i.e., "C: Given a sentence
written in the past or present tense,
A: the student B: will be able to re-
write the sentence in future tense D:
with no errors in tense or tense
contradiction (i.e., I will see her
yesterday.)."
Note: Degree of mastery does not
need to be a percentage.)

Using household materials like milk, food coloring, and dish soap, students will create an
awesome chemical reaction and a beautiful explosion of colors.
What background knowledge is
necessary for a student to
successfully meet these
objectives?
Example: Need to know rules to
play a game, how to work with
others, etc...

Students need to know the experiment procedure in order to create the beautiful
explosion of colors.
Lesson Implementation

carry out the lesson for you.)

of about 1/4 inch. Allow the milk to settle.
2. Add one drop of each of the four colors of food coloring - red, yellow, blue, and
green - to the milk. Keep the drops close together in the center of the plate of
milk.
3. Find a clean cotton swab for the next part of the experiment.
4. Now place a drop of liquid dish soap into a disposable cup and stick one end of
the cotton swab into the dish soap. Place the soapy end of the cotton swab in the
middle of the milk and hold it there for 10 to 15 seconds. Look at that burst of
color! It's like the 4th of July in a bowl of milk!
5. Add another drop of soap to the tip of the cotton swab and try it again.
Experiment with placing the cotton swab at different places in the milk. Notice
that the colors in the milk continue to move even when the cotton swab is
removed.

Meeting your students needs as
people and as learners
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural backgrounds of
your students?

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
This lesson connects to/reflects the local community because the different colors of food
coloring represent the vibrant colors students will find in fireworks.

How will you incorporate the arts (visual, dance and movement, music, drama,
multimedia)?
The Milk Fireworks incorporates visual arts by having students use a variety of different
mediums such as: milk, food coloring, and dish-washing soap to create fireworks.
