Dear Students and Parents,

It is that time of year when we begin another school year. I trust you have had an enjoyable and
restful summer. Our students worked very hard last year and we made some great achievements.
However, we are looking for truly great things to happen this year at Toisnot. Our staff has worked very
hard to prepare for your arrival. We are 100% focused on your individual success. We expect you to
meet your academic goals in an environment where your needs will be met. Our goal is to prepare you
for high school so that you can be an exemplary student as you move toward graduation.

Your focus should be on three areas: Academics, Attitude, & Attendance.

Academics - You must challenge yourself to be the best student you can be.
Attitude - You cannot allow others to distract you from your preparation to graduate.
Attendance - You must be at school to gain this knowledge.

These areas are the cornerstone for your academic success.

Parents, we expect you to support your childs education in any way you are able. Speak with
your childs teachers frequently, volunteer for school activities, ask you child daily what he/she
specifically learned. All students need constant and consistent support from all of those around them to
fully reach their potential.

Your first assignment is to become familiar with this handbook. There is a wealth of
information within. Once you have reviewed the handbook. Complete the form on the preceding page
and turn it in to your homeroom teacher.

The Toisnot Staff is committed to the success of every child. We need the assistance of the
entire Toisnot community to make this happen. Together, we can make this a very successful and
enjoyable school year.

We are going to have a great year!

Sincerely,

Michael S. Kennedy, Principal

????????????????????? FAQ ???????????????????????
Can I prepay for my teenagers breakfast, lunch and extras?
Absolutely! It will be easier for you, your teen and the cafeteria staff if you pre-pay. By applying funds to an ac-
count eliminates the need for remembering and carrying lunch money on a daily basis. We accept cash or checks.
Just write your teenagers name and lunch number on the check. We encourage prepayments to be made during or
after the breakfast meal. We will accept prepayments at lunch, however, with so many to feed in such a short time
frame, prepayment data entry leads to less time for students to eat, socialize and return to class.

How can I be reassured to the accuracy of my teenagers account ?
Students at Wilson County Schools are assigned a bar code number to be used in the cafeterias. Your teenagers
bar code number will remain the same, year to year, throughout enrollment at Wilson County Schools. Upon any
purchase or prepayment, your teen must enter on a keypad his/her bar code number. Once entered the cashier will
ask for a name on the account. For confidentiality and security purposes, we stress to the students not to share their
bar code number . Shirley can also print you an account history report which details your teenagers record of pur-
chases and prepayments over a period of time.

How can I find out the balance in my teenagers account?
You will need to contact Shirley and she will be glad to assist.

What foods are included in a complete school breakfast and lunch ?
Lunch: 1 entre; 1 bread; 2 fruits or vegetables; 1 milk
Breakfast: 1 main dish ; 1 fruit juice; 1 milk

How can I arrange a special diet to accommodate a medical condition for my teenager ?
Obtain a diet order form from Shirley . Take the form to your physician for completion. Be sure that all the infor-
mation is complete and accurate. Return the form to Shirley and she will forward to the Child Nutrition Director.
Shirley will work with the Child Nutrition Director to make the necessary menu modifications. Menu adjustments
are made only for diagnosed medical conditions. We are unable to honor food preferences.

How can I limit / restrict my teenagers purchases?
At the parents or guardians request, our Point of Sale software system allows us to flag a students account with
specific information and/ or restrictions ie, Lunch Only; $2.00 limit; Snacks on Friday; No Extra Sales.
These flags will show up on the memo screen of the register as your child goes through the line. Our cashiers are
trained to diligently watch for the notifications and will do their best. Please consider , though, that in an effort to
serve the students quickly, a flag may be overlooked. Shirley is always available to address any of your questions
and concerns about your teenagers account.

When can I complete a free/reduced meal application?
After August 1st, you may apply. The forms will be available at your teenagers school or at the main Child Nutri-
tion office (519 Ward Boulevard Bldg 7A behind the bus/ maintenance warehouse).

Do I fill out a form for each child in my household?
No. The application is a family application in which the form covers all children in your home.

Do I have to complete a free/reduced meal application each year ?
Yes. The federal guidelines require a new application each year for all students. (There are exceptions for students
who are directly certified through the Wilson County Department of Social Services. )

Can I complete an application for free/ reduced price meals by phone or fax?
No. All applications must be on an original official form and must be mailed or hand delivered to the address on the
back of the application or to your teenagers school office.

On the first school day, will my teenagers meal status be the same as the previous school year ?
Yes. The previous school year meal status will be honored only until October 6, 2011. If an application has not
been completed and processed by October 6th, the meal status will change to paid and your teenager will be
required to pay for his/ her meals. Remember, anytime after August 1st, meal applications are available !

How long does it take to process a completed application ?
Once received/ date stamped in our main Child Nutrition office, we are required to process the application within 10
working days. Our goal is to process applications ASAP so make sure all pertinent information is accurate and legi-
ble so that we can process quickly.

Our Child Nutrition staff look forward to serving your teen each and every day. We thank you for your
support and appreciate your patronage of the Child Nutrition program. If I can be of any assistance, please
feel free to contact me at 399-7845.

Introduction
At Toisnot Middle School, it is our desire that you take pride in your school and that you feel free to make
suggestions for improving it. Our school will be whatever you make it. Let us always have the spirit to do
those things that make it outstanding.

LEARNING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITY OF STUDENTS.
WE BELIEVE THAT EVERY STUDENT WILL BE SUCCESSFUL.

Guidelines for Arrival/Departure
School Office Hours: 8:00-4:00 M-F

Arrival: The front door of the school will be unlocked at 8:00. Students will report either to the cafeteria
to eat breakfast or to the gym if they are not eating. No students will be allowed on the
hallways until the 8:20 bell. The tardy bell will ring at 8:30.

Bus Riders: All buses will unload at the rear of the gym.

Walkers: May only enter the school through either the front door or the rear of the gym.

Bike riders: A bike rack is provided at the rear of the building for those who ride bikes. Bikes should
be locked on the rack. Bike riders will enter the door at the rear of the gym.

Car Pool: Car pool students are to leave their vehicle as soon as they reach the sidewalk. The line will
move faster if multiple cars unload at the same time. No students are to be dropped off on
Corbett Avenue. Car riders cannot be dropped off in the rear of the building. The safety
of walkers and bus riders requires limiting traffic in the rear of the schools to school
buses ONLY.

Departure:
3:30.......... Dismissal of first load bus riders.
3:32.......... Dismissal of carpool students.
3:35.......... Dismissal of walkers, bike riders, and any students staying for athletics, tutoring,
after-school detention, or other extracurricular activities.
*All students are expected to leave campus immediately upon dismissal.

Carpool Traffic
Whenever possible, right turns should be made to enter and exit the parking lot. This prevents traffic
backup in line. Students cannot be picked up or dropped off on Corbett Avenue.

AM: There is a single line of traffic to drop off students. Students are to leave their vehicle as soon as the
sidewalk is reached. This will allow multiple cars to unload at the same time. It is suggested that
carpool students arrive prior to 8:15 to avoid traffic backups. All students who are not in their
homeroom by 8:30 are tardy.

PM: There is a double line of traffic to pickup students. Please remind your child to be looking for their
ride after school. Socializing can backup traffic.

Attendance
All middle school students must be in attendance 90% of the school year. A student who has more
than 18 absences in a school year will not meet the attendance standard for promotion.
Good school attendance is important to your success in middle school. Poor attendance often results in
poor achievement. Students are expected and required by North Carolina State Law to attend school every
day that school is in session, except on those occasions when the school has been notified that you are ill,
have a family emergency, or that your absence has been pre-arranged with school personnel.

In order to be considered in attendance, a student must be present in the school for the school day or at a
place other than the school with the approval of the appropriate school official for the purpose of attending
an authorized school activity. Such activities may include field trips, athletic contests, student conventions,
musical festivals, or any similar approved activity. Except as noted above, a student must be present for at
least one-half of the schools instructional day in order to be recorded present for that day. If a student is
not present for at least one-half of the schools instructional day, then the student is considered
absent. When the reason for the absence is unknown or cannot be categorized as one of the valid/lawful
excuses, the students absence must be recorded as unlawfully/unexcused for that day.

Lawful Absences

2. Quarantine
3. Death in the immediate family. The immediate family includes,
but is not limited to grandparents, parents, brothers and sisters.

2. A students absence from school for any reason other than those listed under Lawful Absences.
3. An absence without a written explanation from the students parent or guardian.

Pre-Arranged Absences
Teachers should be given notice from a parent/guardian in writing as far in advance as possible for
absences involving religious reasons, medical or dental appointments, or family trips.

School Tardy Policy
All students must be in their homerooms each day by 8:30 a.m. Any student who is not in his
homeroom by 8:30 a.m. must receive an admission slip before he will be allowed to enter class.
Additionally, early checkouts will be recorded as a tardy.

2. Persons other than the parent or guardian who have their name on file in
writing and approved by the parent or guardian.

Early checkouts will be recorded as a tardy.

notified and the student will be sent home.

Students who have been absent are required to contact the teacher and find out what work was missed.
Suspended students will be allowed to make up work when they return.

Telephone Use
If a student is sick, the student should report to the office and request that one of the office personnel call
home to arrange for someone to pick up the student. Otherwise, each teacher has a telephone in the
classroom. It is only to be used with the teachers permission.

notify the radio and television stations that broadcast such announcements. The Connect-Ed phone
