Competency #6 Reflection

Competency Six covered Developmentally Appropriate Practices and
Programs which I documented through three artifacts: 1) Enviornment/Schedule
Change 2) Positive Support Plan and 3) Early Language and Literacy Classroom
Observation Pre-K Tool (ELLCO)
The environment/schedule change covered competency 6.9, Ability to design
a daily schedule that is reasonably paced, minimizes the number of transitions, and
provides for a balance of different types of activities and experiences. This specific
assignment shows a before and after schedule, and why I re-designed it, based on
documentation from the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS).
The positive support plan was completed during the semester I worked in a
classroom for children form adverse backgrounds, primarily young victims of abuse
and/or neglect. For this specific child, having been faced with many unfortunate
happenings in his young life, a positive support plan was needed in order to manage
the behaviors he presented, which eventually led to my knowledge in competency
6.11, Ability to promote healthy attachments, emotional regulation, and emotional
expression in infants and young children.
Competency 6.13, Ability to plan and implement learning experiences and
activities that promote the development of language and literacy, was evident when I
administered the Early Language and Literacy Classroom Observation Pre-K Tool
(ELLCO) in the classroom I was currently teaching in. Focusing on classroom
structure, curriculum, the language environment, books and reading, and print and
early writing, I was able to determine the strengths of the classroom, and
weaknesses in the area of language and literacy, and then make recommendations
to enhance this area of development within the classroom setting.
