 Greatest synchronization and file transfer
technologies.
 Bluetooth technology is the key to moving
files effortlessly off and on to various
communication devices.
 Low bandwidth wireless networking technology
 Designed primarily to replace cables for
communication between personal
computing/communication devices
 Used for both voice and data communications
 Common standard for wireless communications
between cell phones and PDAs, headsets.
 Initiated by Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia and Toshiba in
early 1998
 Formed a special interest group known as the Bluetooth
SIG.
 Many companies are members of the Bluetooth
 All are committed to developing and supporting the
Bluetooth standard.
 Bluetooth became an IEEE (Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers) standard during 2002.
 Acceptance of Bluetooth as an industry standard
 Inexpensive
 Bluetooth operates at a frequency range of
2.4GHz-2.4835GHz
 Many versions of Bluetooth have come till now
1.0, 1.0B, 1.1, 1.2, 2.0, 2.1
 Basic difference between the versions is speed,
capacity and security. Future version is 3.0.
 Uses low power and spread-spectrum frequency
hopping
 Low power
 Limitsthe range to about 10 meters
 Signal is weak at 1 milliwatt (compared to cell
phones at 3 watts)
 Spread-Spectrum Frequency Hopping
 Uses79 individual, randomly chosen frequencies
within a designated range (compared to Japan, which
uses 23 frequencies)
 Changes frequencies 1,600 times every second
 Each channel is divided into time slots 625
microseconds long
Scandinavian countries have been leading
the world in wireless communications for a
long time now; and Bluetooth technology
was named after a Scandinavian historical
figure: King Harald Bluetooth, a famous
Danish king of the 10th century; who united
Denmark and introduced Christianity to the
country.
 Bluetooth will be used for personal
area networks
 Very small range networks between cell
phones, PDAs, MP3 players and
computers etc.
 Mobile Phones
 Video Games
 Keyboards
 Headsets
 PDA’S
 Bluetooth USB port
Bluetooth supports both voice and data.
According to Bluetooth spectrum:-

 The voice channels support 64Kb/s.

 An asymmetric data rate is 721Kb/s.
 Symmetric data rate is 432.6Kb/s.
Bluetooth is intended to replace wires in small,
personal communication devices; and does not
support many of the features that a full-fledged
wireless LAN technology needs in order to be used
for corporate local area networks.
 Bluetooth devices have two levels of security:
 Trusted device has unrestricted access to all services
 Untrusted device

 Services have three levels of security:

 Those that require authorization and authentication
 Those that require authorization only
 Those that are open to all devices
 The manufacturers of the vulnerable phones
have developed software patches to fix the
problem
 The device can be set to the non-discoverable
mode when not using Bluetooth technology or
when in an unknown area
