This is a report of research performed in 1968 at The Franklin Institute Research Laboratories in Philadelphia, PA. by Bruce Lamar Rosenberg. We tested the muscle recruitment hypothesis of fatigue compensation, wherein increasing tension and the spread of tension over different muscles compensates for performance decrement with time at task. Muscle action potentials were measured at 40 sites over the body while a tracking task was being performed. The total task duration was 4 hours in 4 separate 50 minute sessions with 10 minute breaks. A "U" or "J" shaped relationship between tracking error and muscle tension was found. Several different analyses were performed including a factor analysis to determine grouping among muscles.
