Primary Activity 1

Topic/Title of Lesson: Standing Jumps and Arm Spans


Focused Domain: Cognitive Development

Goal: Estimate, make and use measurements of objects, quantities and relationships and
determine acceptable levels of accuracy.

Objective: Students will measure length to the nearest centimeter and to the nearest inch.

Procedure:

1. I will have three volunteers with me in front of the class to measure the students arm
span; each one will take turns measuring. I will write the results on the white board.
2. Students will now work in pairs measuring and recording each others arm span.
3. When students are finished we will measure students jumps one at a time. I will have
three volunteers; one to mark the jump, one to record the jump, and one to help me
measure the length of the jump.

Advanced Preparation: Warm Up/ Lead In: Students, have you ever played jump with
your friends? Do you ever put an object where you jumped and then compare to see who
jumped the farthest? Well today we are going to do that, and we are also going to
measure our arm span. Have you ever seen a bird in flight and try to guess its wingspan?
That is, the length of the birds wings from left wing to right wing. Today we will
measure our arm span from the tip of our left middle finger to the tip of our right middle
finger.

Math Message: A friend measures your arm span in inches. Another friend measures
your arm span in centimeters. Who do you think will report the larger number?

List Materials: Text: Everyday Mathematics Student Math Journal, measuring tape,
pencil, paper, clip--board

Developmental benefits: Estimate, make and use measurements of objects, quantities and
relationships and determine acceptable levels of accuracy.

Measure length, volume and weight / mass using rulers, scales and other appropriate
measuring instruments in the customary and metric systems.

Future Plans: Additional and individualized attention will be given to students with any
special needs; visuals, peer editing, and whole group review discussion. If necessary, I
will give students homework reinforcement sheets and use extra manipulative.
