Primary Activity 4

Topic/Title of Lesson: Patterns in Counting

Focused Domain: cognitive development
2
ND
Grade Mathematics

Goal: Students will recognize number patterns through a variety of activities.

Objective: : Students will review counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s; and to describe patterns that result
from counting.

Procedure: Preassessment: Informal discussion at the beginning of lesson. (Why and when
would we use patterns for counting.)

Motivation: Students, lets count by 2s starting at 10, I will start. I will then call out your name
to continue the counting. Students, now lets get in a big circle. Now I will use this little ball
and when I toss it to you, you must follow the counting pattern. Lets start with 10, and counting
by 5s lets see how far we can go. When you say the number, toss the ball to someone else.

Statement of purpose: To review counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s; and to describe patterns that
result from counting.

Teacher Modeling / Demonstration: I will count aloud by 2s starting at 2, going to 20; I will
then do the same thing with 5s and 10s.

Guided Practice: I will demonstrate how to use the calculator by adding the 2s, then 5s, then 10s.

Check for understanding: Students, using your calculators, show me the process of adding
three numbers to 120 five consecutive times. Tell me each number pattern you get by adding the
number three. If you understand what I want you to do, give me thumbs up.

Independent Practice or Activity: Students will now complete the math boxes in their math
journals and the correlated home link will be assigned for homework.

Advanced Preparation: Textbooks and worksheets on patterns

List Materials: Text: Everyday Mathematics Student Math Journal, ball, overhead, pencil,
calculator

Developmental benefits: Use algebraic and analytical methods to identify and describe
patterns and relationships in data, solve problems and predict results.

Interpret and describe numerical relationships using tables, graphs and symbols.

Solve problems involving pattern identification and completion of patterns.

Future Plans: Additional and individualized attention will be given to students with any
special needs; visuals, peer editing, and whole group review discussion. If necessary, I
will give students homework reinforcement sheets and use extra manipulative
