Date:
Cam and Follower
Aim :
To analyze the motion of cam and follower.
Apparatus Required:
1. Roller Follower
2. Flat Follower
3. Knife edge Follower
4. Roller and Protractor
Theory:
The cam is a mechanical member used to impact the desired motion of a
follower in direct contact. The cam is rotating but follower may be rotating or
reciprocating. Cam changes the rotation motion to reciprocating motion. A cam and
follower combination belongs to higher pair in kinematic pair.
Necessary elements of cam are-
1. A driver member known as Cam.
2. A driven member known as Follower.
3. A frame that supports cam known as Guide.
Types of Follower:
1. Knife edge Follower
2. Roller Follower
3. Flat faced Follower
The cam and follower have line contact constitute a higher pair. Generally the
cams are rotating at an uniform speed by the shafts, but the follower motion is
predetermined according to shape of cam.

Procedure:
1. The initial position of cam and follower are set at 0 which refers to zero fit.
2. One complete rotation was given to the cam and for each 10 rotation of cam the
corresponding follower displacement was noted down.
3. The result graph was plotted between cam angles and follower displacement.

Tabulation:
