Language and Word Study Word Study: Students are engaged in thinking about how to read, understand, and spell words through early literacy concepts, phonological awareness, letter knowledge, letter-sound relationships, knowledge of syllable types, (CVC, CVe, vowel teams, -le, and r syllables) high frequency words, word meaning and vocabulary, word solving actions. Conventional Use of Written Language: Students will work on the standardized spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and organization that help both readers and writers. Reading Community Reading: Students are engaged in shared, interactive, or modeled reading with varying levels of teacher support. Students will work on decoding, fluency, and comprehension through community reading, as well as building vocabulary. Guided Reading: Students are reading teacher-chosen text for instruction. The teacher is working with small groups of students to develop their processing strategies. Together they read and discuss a variety of increasingly challenging texts at their instructional level. Independent Reading: Students have time daily to read silently a variety of books of their own choosing with teacher support and guidance.
