Course Goals: This class is designed around the Common Core State Standards for Algebra 1/Geometry Understanding concepts of congruence Understanding concepts of similarity, right triangles, and trigonometry Understanding concepts of circles Understanding concepts of equations in geometry Understanding concepts of geometric measurement and dimension Understanding concepts of geometric modeling Using mathematical practices to solve problems
Classroom Expectations: Participation Listen attentively Ask Questions Complete the required assignments Respectfulness Give yourself grace to make mistakes Understand that your classmates in a process of learning too Actively listen to instructions Keep inappropriate technology put away Grading: Assessments 70% Quizzes 20% Participation 10%
Practice for Proficiency: Daily Assignments In-class work
Opportunities to Prove Proficiency: Quizzes Assessments Tests Projects Other
Integrity Policy: All work submitted should be done by the student. Plagiarism will absolutely not be tolerated in any form including copying another students homework. Remember that collaboration is different from copying. The consequence for cheating or copying another students work is (at minimum) the opportunity to do the work again honestly.
Arranged Absences: If you are unable to attend class and know ahead of time, please check in with me. If you arrive late to class, please take your seat and try to avoid disrupting the class. I will get you up to speed as soon as possible. Notes and assignments are posted at mrmarl.weebly.com for your convenience.
Grading Policies and Procedures: Grading is based on student understanding of learning targets derived from the Common Core State Standards for Algebra 1 and Geometry. Students must demonstrate proficiency through assessments, which may include tests and projects. However, students have flexibility and may choose to show proficiency in another way that must be approved by me and completed by the day of the assessment. Students will be graded on a 1 to 5 scale of proficiency shown below:
To pass the course, students must receive an average of proficient on all learning targets. A 90%-100% B 80%-89.99% C 70%-79.99% F 69.99% or below
*No extra credit will be assigned in this course. **Students may retake an assessment as many times as they need prior to the next assessment. ***Students will also have two weeks prior to the semester final to prove proficiency on any learning target from that semester.
If you have any further questions about grading procedures or policies, please feel free to email me.
Materials Needed: Every day upon entering the classroom, materials required for that day will be posted. Each student, however, should always bring to class a pencil, paper, and a scientific or graphing calculator (not a cell phone calculator). Please see me if you are unable to acquire these items.
State Changes To Testing: Due to the institution of Common Core State Standards, the former OAKS test has been replaced by Smarter Balanced testing. What this means for you, the student, is that we will be transitioning from multiple-choice recall questions to questions that are designed to test your ability to solve problems and investigate real world situations.
In light of this, the format of this class will be tailored to this transition. Writing, investigative approaches, and project-based assessments will be embedded into the coursework. Please be assured that I will do my best to prepare you for the changes this year.
Dear Students, I am here for you. I chose this profession because I love guiding students through the learning process and I have a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. I will work to support you in the best ways possible. This class will not be easy, but I want to assure you that I will provide you with all of the tools and skills necessary to pass this course proficient in all learning targets and prepared for continued education in mathematics. If you have any questions, please feel free to talk to me or send me an email at marla@ycschools.org . I am looking forward to getting to know you over the course of the year.
Blessings to you always, Mr. Marl
