Cooper University Hospital announced plans to create a health records database exchange called the Camden Health Information Exchange that would allow local hospitals, doctors, and healthcare providers to electronically share patient health information like discharge summaries, lab results, medications, and X-rays in order to provide better coordinated care. The exchange aims to reduce wait times for collecting patient records from multiple hospitals and cut costs by limiting unnecessary testing. While still in early development stages, the exchange is expected to be operational by spring.

Cooper University Hospital Announces Plans for Health Records
Database Exchange Will create an exchange to provide doctors with access to records such as hospital discharge summaries, lab results, medications, and X-rays CAMDEN, NJ Today, Cooper University Hospital announces plans for a health records database exchange. The Camden Health Information Exchange will bring New Jerseys main hospitals together, Cooper University Hospital, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, and Virtual Health, in an effort to provide the best possible patient care. With a crowded waiting room and busy staff, it can take a week to collect all of their records from local hospitals, said Jeffrey Brenner, Cooper University Hospital. This is not acceptable in 2009. This effort will allow hospitals, doctors, and other healthcare providers to electronically share personal health information and coordinate care. The service also hopes to cut costs by reducing unnecessary testing. Security features are used to keep personal information secure and prevent records from being accessed by unpermitted persons. Camden hospitals are still in the early stages of creating the exchange but expect to have it running by spring. ### TK
