The Sleep Matrix
Why do we sleep? What governs when or how long we sleep? This activity will assist you in
understanding two common sleep theories, recuperation and circadian, which provide different
answers to these questions. Depending on which one you support, it may change your outlook on
sleep and your current sleeping habits.
Categorie each characteristic under the correct theory!recuperation or circadian!by placing
an "X# in the appropriate column. Then, answer the questions that follow.

We have a sleep&wake cycle. X
When we sleep is based on
some evolutionary aspects.
X
'. What are the main differences between the recuperation and circadian theories? The
difference between recuperation and circadian sleep theories are that the circadian theory
states that we sleep in response to a sleep&wake cycle ()* + hour cycles, that is evolutionarily
determined. The recuperation theory refers to a period of recovery. -ot getting enough sleep
causes increases in physiological and behavioral disturbances
).
Which theory do you most agree with? ./plain. 0 agree most with the recuperation theory,
because without resting, the body and brain does not function properly. 1any illnesses can
arise with no sleep. 1emory loss can also be a factor to no sleep. The recuperation theory
