3. The explanation of solution and equation.
Case 1. One running west, south and then east to the refinery.
( West + South + East )*( The cost of running the pipeline on BLM ground )
= ( 5miles + 15miles +40miles )*( $500,000 )
= $30,000,000
Case 2. One heading east through the mountain and then south to the refinery.
( East through the mountain + South )
* ( The cost of running the pipeline on BLM ground )
+ ( Drilling the mountain + Cost for environmental study + Delay cost for 4 months )
= ( 35miles + 15miles )*( $500,000 ) + ( $2,000,000 + $320,000 +4(months)*$350,000 )
= $27,000,000
Case 3. The shortest distance from well to refinery across the private ground.
( Southeast )*( Cost of BML + Additional cost of The private ground )
= [(15
2
+35
2
)
1/2
miles] + ( $350,000 + $500,000 )
= $32,367,035
Case 4. The shortest path across the private ground (directly south), then straight to the
refinery (directly east).
( South )*[ ( Cost of BML + Additional cost of the private ground )
+ ( East )*(Cost of BML) ]
= ( 15miles )*( $350,000 + $500,000 )
= $30,250,000
Comparing among 4 Cases, Optimal cost is Case 2.

C(x) : Involving crossing some private ground as well as some BLM ground.
( 0x35, South or Southeast)*[ (Cost of BML + Additional cost the private ground)
+ ( East )*(Cost of BML)
= [ ( 15
2
+x
2
)
1/2
+ ( 35 x ) ]miles*( $500,000 ) + [(15
2
+x
2
)
1/2
miles ]*( $350,000 )
To find minimum cost for x point, use derivation and graph.
C(x) = 850,000*( 15
2
+x
2
)
1/2
+500,000*( 35 - x ), ( 0 x 35 )
C`(x) = 850,000*x/( 15
2
+x
2
)
1/2
-500,000
C`(x) = 0, x = ( 22500/189 )
1/2
=10.91
x =10.91 miles , Minimum cost is $27,810,795

4. Reflection
Most people who have not experienced into Math class or Math over an academic
purpose, they easily treat Math as something that is disparate against real life. As a
result, some people feel they dont need to know and do well about math. However, even
from counting coins for paying purchase to sending a spaceship into space, Math has an
intimate connection with human life. It is not a matter of need or needless but
prerequisite basic of daily life. As I see above, with math, I can check ideal costs for
pipeline. Given the numbers of all expense, we can calculate the economized price for
pipeline construction by using derivation. It might be a rash decision, however, based
on this project, Im pretty sure that math is a very beneficial tool for life. Its better to
focus on life of math if we have a chance to learn.
