IT’S EASTER AGAIN! ORTHODOX EASTER 4/27/08
3

5
DID you know that TODAY IS EASTER ?! YES,
6

7
again. Not for mainline Protestant or Catholic
8

9
churches, but for the EASTERN ORTHODOX church
10

11
this is EASTER !
12

13

14
“Easter is not only a movable holiday but a multiple
15
one: in most years Western Christian churches and
16
Eastern Orthodox churches celebrate Easter on
17 different dates. In 2008, for example, Easter is
18 celebrated on March 23 by Western churches and
19 April 27 by Orthodox churches. But in 2007, the
20 two celebrations occurred on the same date, April
21 8.”
22

23 The churches base the dates on different calendars:

24 Western churches use the Gregorian calendar, the
25 standard calendar for much of the world, and
26 Orthodox churches use the older, Julian calendar.
27 SEE http://www.factmonster.com/spot/easter1.html
28

2
1
SO those of you (or us) who go by the GREGORIAN
2

3
CALENDAR celebrated EASTER several weeks ago,
4

5
and the EASTER SEASON is coming to an end, but
6

7
for the EASTERN ORTHODOX who use the
8

9
JULIAN CALENDAR EASTER IS TODAY and the
10

11
EASTER SEASON will span another month or so.
12

13

14

15
In fact, I wanted to attend an ORTHODOX EASTER
16

17
SERVICE, in my continuing quest to BRIDGE THE
18

19
GAP between the different FAITH TRADITIONS but
20

21
I REALIZED too late that they celebrate EASTER at
22

23
MIDNIGHT (or at least the one I went to was not open
24

25
at 8 a.m. ) and looking online it apparently is the
26

27
custom of the orthodox, in general, to celebrate
28

3
1
EASTER at midnight—or the “early possible
2

3
moment” as they say.
4

7
I’ve been visiting different churches of different
8

9
traditions over the course of the past few years,
10

11
including some of the ORTHODOX CHURCHES,
12

13
including COPTIC around Southern California.
14

15

16

17 And the ORTHODOX worship differently than many

18

19 of the WESTERN churches, --at least that has been

20

21 my PERSONAL OBSERVATION based on the

22

23 COPTIC CHURCHES I’ve visted this year.

14

15

16

17
You ALSO KNOW (or should know) that the JEWISH
18

19
just celebrated PASSOVER last week, and the
20

21
EASTERN CHURCH always makes sure that their
22

23
EASTER CELEBRATION comes AFTER
24

25
PASSOVER, never before (so they say).
26

27

28

5
1
“The Eastern Orthodox Church also applies the
2
formula so that Easter always falls after Passover,
3
since the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ
4
took place after he entered Jerusalem to celebrate
5
Passover. In the Western Church, Easter sometimes
6
precedes Passover by weeks”.
7

8
There have been proposals, including the 2nd
9

10
VATICAN COUNSEL in 1963, to have a FIXED
11

12
EASTER DATE common to both the EASTERN &
13

14
WESTERN CHURCHES but so far it has not been
15

16
acted upon see
17

18 http://www.factmonster.com/spot/easter1.html
19

20

21 In fact, the ORTHODOX usually refer to “EASTER” as

22 PASCHA.
23

24

25 Pascha (Greek: Πάσχα), also called Easter, is the

26 feast of the Resurrection of the Lord. Pascha is a
27 transliteration of the Greek word, which is itself a
28 transliteration of the Hebrew pesach, both words

6
1
meaning Passover. (A minority of English-speaking
2
Orthodox prefer the English word 'Pasch.')

17 Some Orthodox Christians discourage the use of
18 the word Easter, believing that the term has roots in
19 pagan rites of the spring equinox and overtones of
20 fertility. http://orthodoxwiki.org/Pascha
21

22

23 Here’s MORE ABOUT what they say concerning

24

25 PASCHA and COMMUNION in the ORTHODOX

26

27 CHURCH :
28

7
1

2
“The Liturgy of St John Chrysostom continues as
3
usual. Holy communion has, again and again, the
4
troparion of the Resurrection. It is sung while the
5
faithful partake. To Orthodox Christians, receiving
6
communion on Easter Sunday is very important.
7
Many parishes take the Paschal Sermon of St. John
8
Chrysostom literally and commune all Orthodox
9
Christians who are in attendance.
10
http://orthodoxwiki.org/Pascha
11

12
It SHOULD BE NOTED that the “ORTHODOX
13

14
CHRISTIAN’ think of themselves as DISTINCT from
15

16
CHRISTIANS in general, including PROTESTANTS
17

18 & CATHOLICS.
19

20

21

22 In fact, at one of the COPTIC churches that I visited,

23

24 in BELLFLOWER of all places—although

25

26 “VISITORS’ are welcome to attend the service, if you

27

28

8
1
plan to partake in HOLY COMMUNION they expect
2

3
you to be “ORTHODOX” not just Christian.
4

7
It was at this COPTIC church in Bellflower THAT
8

9
they began the communion ceremony and I was
10

11
preparing to follow the PROCESSION up to the front
12

13
where the PRIEST gives the bread & wine (BODY &
14

15
BLOOD) but as I was about to do so the fellow next to
16

17 me said, “YOU MUST TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF”

18

19 and then he asked “ARE YOU ORTHODOX?” and I

20

21 said “NO”.
22

23

24

25 He said, “YOU must be ORTHODOX’ to participate in

26

27 communion”, THEN he added, “BUT ASK THE

28

9
1
PRIEST” and pointed to the front. By that time I was
2

3
already a little embarrassed having been “OUTED” so
4

5
to speak –with others around overhearing our short
6

7
conversation—while I thought I had been BLENDING
8

9
IN so well.
10

11

12

13
Anyways, I went up to the front—following the
14

15
procession, being very RESPECTFUL and
16

17 REVERENT of their traditions and the PRIEST said

18

19 to me, “Are you Orthodox” and I said “NO, JUST

20

21 CHRISTIAN” and he responded, politely, but firmly,

22

23 “You cannot take communion, but TALK TO ME after

24

25 the service.”
26

27

28

10
1
I went back to my seat and decided to leave—not
2

3
because I felt so uncomfortable but I was, and
4

5
continue to b e, on a TOUR OF CHURCHES, going
6

7
from one to another around southern California, and
8

9
sometimes only staying for half a service or less.
10

11

12
The WEEK AFTER EASTER in the ORTHODOX
13

14
CHURCH is referred to as “BRIGHT WEEK” (SEE
15

16
http://orthodoxwiki.org/Bright_Week )
17

18

19

20 CONCERNING the ORTHODOX WORSHIP STYLE

21

22 in general---it is SOMEWHAT different than that of

23

24 the western PROTESTANT OR CATHOLIC church

25

26 in that they place a HIGH EMPHASIS on visual

27

28 beauty (icons and stain glassed pictures are

11
1
EVERYWHERE in most COPTIC churches, maybe
2

3
Armenian too), along with the use of other SENSUAL
4

5
(that which captures the physical senses) objects,
6

7
including INCENSE, and the LITURGY IS SUNG OR
8

9
CHANTED, not just recited. IN FACT, the PRIEST
10

11
or other readers (sometimes children as well) will
12

13
SING every word.
14

15

16

17 Also, the CONGREGATION often STANDS through

18

19 MOST if not all of the WORSHIP SERVICE (see

20

21 http://www.orthodoxwiki.org/Worship )
22

23

24

25 It has been my PERSONAL OBSERVATION as well

26

27 —that STANDING UP is the NORM in many

28

12
1
ORTHODOX or COPTIC services (much more the
2

3
norm than sitting).
4

7
Finally, the COPTIC churches that I’ve visited,
8

9
in general, have been very VISUALLY CAPTIVATING
10

11
from the outside. They tend to place a high emphasis
12

13
on external beauty as opposed to, for example, a
14

15
MENNONITE church that is just the opposite in
16

17 terms of visual beauty and appeal to the senses.

18

19 And so, TODAY IS EASTER, again, and I hope to visit

20

21 an ORTHODOX CHURCH or two, and will tell you

22

23 about my experience in weeks to come.

24

25
PRAYER: Dear GOD, thank YOU for
26

27
YOUR presence in our lives,
28 both eastern & western Christians.
13

4
