Students and School

After reading The Sanctuary of School and The Good Immigrant Student, we
know that, Lynda Barry loved school, and Bich Minh Nguyen hated school. Thus,
they had different purposes to education, but they all had problems in school.
From The Sanctuary of School, Lynda Barry loved the school, she enjoyed the
time in school, so every morning, and she would get up very early and sneak out of
her home to go to school. She liked to meet and communicate with teachers and
janitors. And she really liked to draw picture for Mrs. LeSane in Room 2 before class
beginning. She thought the time she stayed in school was to enjoy a thoroughly
secure, warm and stable world (Barry, 69). However, different with Barry thought
school was a world she absolutely relied on, Bich Minh Nguyen this school was a
very terrified place. Nguyen hated herself to be an attention point; it would make her
embarrassed and feel uncomfortable. She wanted she could disappear and everyone
could ignore her.
Because of these two authors had different attitudes toward school; they had
different purposes to education. For Lynda Barry, school was a place that she could
enjoy herself and get love, it was a very important place for her and she loved staff in
school, so she did well in her education in school. Nguyen was also a great student
and she was good at study. However, she didnt like school, the purpose she studied
hard was that she thought if she studied well, the teacher wouldnt talk with her,
others would ignore her, and she could get the protection by teachers. Besides,
sometimes she would attract by the reward teacher showed and then she tried her best

to study and won that reward.
Although, they had opposite attitudes toward school and different purposes to
education, both of them had the problems in school. Barry loved school, so her
problem was to make the school better. Because of government thought it was
unnecessary to spend much money for public schools, so they cut down the budget.
And this made the school become poor and teachers get a little money, it also let
school couldnt give students creative activities, teach art and music. So Barrys
problem was how to make the school have enough money to have a good education
system. Different than Barry, Nguyen didnt like school and she felt uncomfortable in
school, so her problem was about herself. In school, she was a foreign, and some
teachers had a little bias to foreigners, at least they couldnt equal to all students, they
would divide students into foreigners and natives. The author was a shy and quite girl,
she was afraid of her teacher, so she tried her best to study, one of the important
purposes was made the teacher ignore her and all she wanted is to be disappeared.
Above all, we have concluded that different students have different attitudes
toward school, and they also have different purpose to education, but both of them
have problems, it can be the problem for school and it also can because of themselves.
