DESIGN APPROACH OF MINIMUM TRANSVERSE REINFORCEMENT

1) Step 1: Define a member at Strength and Extreme Limit State if it is a compression member or a flexural member
based on the following equation. (ACI 318-08 21.5.1 and 21.6.1, African Concrete Code symposium)

If yes, it will be a compression member, so the next step shall be taken.
If no, it will be a flexural member, AASHTO 5.8.2.5 (shear reinforcement) shall apply.

2) Step 2: Check where load points at Strength and Extreme Limit State are in PM interaction diagram which is
generated by the concrete core section equivalent to the section after concrete cover spalling off.

No Yes
3) Step 3: Apply AASHTO Articles mentioned in the above flow chart.
