Second Grade Digital Citizenship Lesson



This lesson is designed to be presented at the beginning of the year as an introduction to Digital
Citizenship. All teachers are responsible for reminding students of Digital Citizenship concepts
throughout the school year when using computers.

At the second grade level students will be introduced to the following concepts:
CT K-2.1 Identify the computer as a machine that helps people at school work and play.
CT K-2.3 Know the schools rules for using the computers. Understand the importance of
protecting personal information or passwords. Understand the basic principles of the
ownership of ideas.



The teacher will discuss the following concepts at the beginning of the lesson:
1. Discuss the AUP and what means when students use the computers.
2. Computer lab rules As needed
3. Discuss what the students know about using computers:
What can we use computers to do?
What is the Internet? What can we do on the Internet?
How many have computers at home and access the Internet?
4. The students will view the interactive video What 2 Do on the Web at:
http://www.netsmartzkids.org/NetSmartzRules/What2DoOnTheWeb
The teacher can show this from one computer to allow discussion of each ways to use
the Internet: Communication, Information, Entertainment
Discuss each of the ways to use the Internet both good and bad
5. The students will view the interactive video Meet the Wizzy Wigs at:
http://www.netsmartzkids.org/NetSmartzRules/MeetTheWizzyWigs
Discuss each of these characters and how they represent dangers when using the
Internet.
6. Allow time for students to ask questions.
