ALBEDO (al-BEE-doh)
A measure of how much light that hits a
surface is refected without being absorbed.
Something that appears white refects most
of the light that hits it and has a high albedo,
while something that looks dark absorbs most
of the light that hits it, indicating a low albedo.
SOME
ALBEDO
NUMBERS
FOR COMMON
ITEMS
80 White Paint
72 Yellow Paint
60-70 White paper
30-45 Wood Chips
30-40 Dry Sand
30 Aged Concrete
20-35 Painted Metal
25 Green Grass
18-21 Deciduous Trees
17 Bare Soil
15-30 Flowers
2-15 Dark Metal
9-12 Succulent foliage
2-10 Rusted Metal
<1 New Asphalt
<1 Black Paint
Some things to keep in mind: ALBEDO is not the same as TEMPERATURE. A higher albedo should result in a lower surface temperature.
An albedo of 80 means that 80% of the suns energy that hits that surface is reected back into space.
