The idea in The Pillowman could be a number of things, but I think that the main idea
was that life gets harder as you get older, and events may happen to you that you dont think you
deserve. Michael Katurian was abused by his parents, causing him to be slower than most. He
appeared to be innocent and happy. But in the end, he was the one who murdered the children.
But, I think that because Michael said no to the Pillowman when he was younger, that he knew
what was to come. He loved Katurians stories and admired his brother. In some way, I think he
knew the whole time what he was doing and that it was wrong. The scene between Michael and
Katurian was very powerful. The acting was incredible and when Katurian killed Michael, I was
in shock.
I think that Katurian is the Pillowman. I think he knew what was going to happen to
these little kids. Once he found out about his parents, I think he came to the realization that
anyone can be cruel, even if it is completely unsuspected. The actual story of The Pillowman is
very tragic, but in a way, it makes sense. I dont think that the Pillowman is that evil. Life does
only get harder as you get older. With more freedom, comes more responsibility.
The setting helps promote the idea of events may happen to you that you dont think you
deserve by having it start out with Katurian in the investigation room. I dont think that Katurian
should have been killed in the end. He didnt ask Michael to act them out, Michael did that by
his own free will. Also, the story about Katurian and Michaels childhood promotes the idea
even further.
