Zuzana Licko

(b. 1961)
Zuzana Licko bought one of the first generation Macin-
tosh computers after her graduation from the University of
California. She used the bitmap format to create her lo-res
typefaces. The letters are gridded by size to ft into the map
of the screen. While others disregarded the lo-res fonts as
inefectual, she used them entirely in an issue of the maga-
zine migr. After that publication, people began inquiring
about it and demand arose. She now contributes to and
runs the type foundry of that magazine which ignores
boundaries. Her inspiration comes from technology, the
personality of the text and understanding the classic fonts,
creating designs that are traditional, radical and functional.
Her type says something beyond the text.
