TIDES

INTRODUCTION:
The main influence on water is the gravitational pull of the moon creating low and high
tide. The sun also has influences tide but only pulls about half has much as the moon
since the sun is over 400xs further away than moon.
When the sun is opposite the moon, it diminishes the effect of the moon and lowers the
tide. This is called a neap tide and occurs with the first and third quarter moon phase.
When the sun aligns with the moon on either side of the earth, it pulls with the moon
creating a super high tide and super low tides This is called a neap tide and occurs with
the full and new moon phase.
ther factors affect the predicting tides such as the sun being higher in the s!y during
summer than winter, the moons orbit being an ellipse not a perfect circle, and more.

PROCEDURE:
.. /ut earth 0coo!ie1 on flat surface.
2. /lace yourself 0goldfish*bunny crac!er1 on top of earth near 3orth /ole.
4. /lace ocean 0string1 around the earth, pretending water forms a sphere.
4. /lace moon 0marshmallow1 on right side of earth, on the outside the ocean sphere.
5. 6rag right side of ocean towards the moon gravitational pull, creating a bulge.
7. The moon also has a pull on the earth, so move the earth a little towards the moon.
The bulges should be equal on left and right side.
8. The bulges represent high tide. The flatter area represents low tide.
9. :otate the earth, with you on it, so you experience two high tides and two low tides.
;. /lace sun 0m'm1 on either the top or bottom side end of earth, on outside of ocean
sphere. This diminishes lowers tide <ust a bit and is called neap tide.
.0. 3ow, place sun in line with the moon on right side 0moon first, sun second in line1.
... /ull the ocean tide bulge further out to simulate the super high and low tide created
during spring tide.
