Question 3:

Instructions:
Read the following passage from an allied health lesson. Click on the sentence that
contains a direct quotation and requires quotation marks and a citation.
Passage:
Posterior Tibial Tendonitis
Many runners and other athletes experience dysfunction of their posterior
tibial tendons at some point. This common injury occurs when activity inflames or
tears the tendon, which is located just behind the inside ankle bone and connects
the calf muscle to the bones on the inside of the foot. Non-surgical treatment
options include rest, ice, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, orthotics, and steroid
injections. In December 2011, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
stated that the most common complication [of surgery] is that pain is not
completely relieved. Patients and their doctors should discuss both surgical and non-
surgical options because both types of interventions have their benefits and
drawbacks.

Feedback:
A direct quotation is a report of the exact words of the original author or speaker.
Direct quotations should be placed inside quotation marks and correctly cited to
avoid plagiarism, which is the wrongful appropriation of another persons words or
ideas. Look for key words such as states, says, reports, and notes to help you
recognize direct quotations.
The correct answer contains a direct quotation from the American Academy of
Orthopaedic Surgeons. The word stated is a clue that the words in the sentence
are taken directly from an outside source.
Because this sentence contains information from an outside source, the quoted
material should be placed in quotation marks and an appropriately formatted
citation should be added. The citation will show the reader where to find the original
quote and will give credit to the original author.
