Operations research uses analytical techniques to help make decisions and solve complex problems, as shown in its application to military operations. During World War II, operations research helped with tasks like finding enemy submarines and delivering supplies. It was also used successfully in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm during the Persian Gulf conflict. Models and simulations were used to plan logistics for moving over a million people and vehicles between 33 countries, and to simulate potential missions nearly 300 times to help end the conflict quickly. Identifying crew rest limits and scheduling optimized airlift helped address early logistical challenges.

Operations research is the discipline that use advances analytical techniques to
take solid decisions and resolve complex problems. These techniques gave an effective assistance during the Word War II, helping finding radars, search for enemy submarines and delivery of supplies. In the military sector exist a scientific society specialized in the methodologies and the military operations research, the Military Operations Research Society (MORS). An example how military operations research is use us the system ADANS (Airlift Deployment Analysis System). This system was used in the conflict of the Persian Gulf, divided in two operations: Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Desert Shield mission requires a grand logistic effort to move the air, naval and land forces of 33 countries, approximately a million people, 200 ships, 2400 airplanes, and 2000 helicopters. The first problem they had was the departure of too many airplanes, the personnel have a maximum hours of flight in periods of 24 hours as a consequence of the physical wear. So the analysts identified the instant where the crew reach their operative limits, and call some reservists and allow the permanent crew to have some rest. The Storm of the Desert mission was practiced and studied by computer simulations nearly 300 times, causing the quickly ending of the conflict. The analysts had to program the optical utilization of airplanes, trails, crew to perform different tasks, besides they had to consider a number of restrictions to reflect reality and control the supply chains.
