Math: Island Conquer

Subject: Math
Grades: 2
nd
and 5
th

Setting: 2 fifth-grade students sitting next to each other at table, 1 second-
grade student sitting on the other end of the table
Objective:
o 5
th
grade: Students will be given a set of 4 coordinates that they will
place in the correct place of the coordinate plane to create a rectangle
or square. Students will then find the length of each side of the
rectangle, and find the area by multiplying length by width. They will
each accurately complete at least 3 rectangles with areas.
o 2
nd
grade: Given different manipulatives and adult assistance, student
will accurately add single digit numbers (0-9) and give the answers
either orally, with fingers, or written.
Opening:
o 5
th
grade:
Students will begin by independently practicing their daily
multiplication facts. They do this everyday when they come in
for math. Tell them that today they will be finding the area of
different squares and rectangles by multiplying, so it is
important to continue practicing our multiplication facts.
Show students the Island Conquer game we played from last
week and have them retell what we did during the game.
Remind them of the X and Y axis, and how coordinates are
written (X,Y) so we know how to place them on a coordinate
plane.
o 2
nd
grade: As 5
th
graders are independently working, show the student
the different manipulatives given in her bin. Explain that she will be
adding, and can use cubes, her fingers, or anything else to help her
add numbers.
She has been working on addition for the past few days, so she
has background knowledge of addition.
Activity:
o 5
th
Graders:
I will model how to create a rectangle or square from the
coordinates I am given.
Ask students how to find the area. If they say to count
the boxes inside the shape, ask if there is any other way
to find it. If students to not reach the answer on their
own, show them how A=L x W.
I will model how to find the area using the equation.
Students will play the island conquer game together, checking
each others answers as they go.
o 2
nd
Grader:
As I help 5
th
graders get started, this student will work on her
own to the best of her ability while sitting next to me. If
needed, I will give assistance.
After 5
th
graders have a good idea of the game, I will work
more one-on-one with this student and assist her in counting
with one-to-one correspondence while using manipulatives.
Closing:
o 5
th
graders:
Students will add up the total areas when they each have at
least 3 rectangles, more if time allows it.
Ask if students found anything interesting with the areas.
i.e.) what shapes gave the greatest area? How do the
areas compare to the perimeters found in the last game?
If a shape had a large perimeter, did it also have a large
area? Etc.
o 2
nd
grader:
Verbally ask her two or three single-digit addition problems to
check for understanding. If she does not give the correct
answer (verbally, with fingers, or written), assist her in getting
the correct answers.
