MOTION 8
TEXTBOOK QUESTIONS AND THEIR ANSWERS
Q.1. An object has moved through a distance. Can it have zero
displacement? If yes, support your answer with example.
Ans. Yes, it can have zero displacement.
Example : When a person walking along a circular track
returns back to the starting point, after completing one circle,
his displacement is zero, but he covers a distance equal to 2r
where r is the radius of circular track. The displacement is
zero, because the shortest distance between the initial and
final position of the person is zero.
Q. 2. A farmer moves along the boundary of a square field of
side 10 m in 40 s. What will be the magnitude of
displacement of the farmer at the end of 2 minutes and 20
seconds?
Ans. Time for journey of farmer =2 min and 20 s =140 s.
Perimeter of square field ABCD =4 10 m =40 m.

Time for going around the square field once =40 s.
Number of times the farmer goes around the square field
=
140s 1
3
40s 2
= times

Now for going once around the square field, the displacement
=Zero.

For going thrice around the square field, the displacement
=Zero

For

2
=20 m
It is clear from the diagram that if the farmer starts from
point A, then he will cover 10 m along AB and then 10 m
along BC.

Q. 3. Which of the following is true for displacement?
(a) It cannot be zero
(b) Its magnitude is greater than the distance travelled
by the object.
Ans. None of the statements (a) or (b) are true for displacement.
Q. 4. Distinguish between speed and velocity.
Ans. (a) Speed is the rate of change of motion, whereas velocity
is the rate of change of motion in a specified direction.
(b) Speed is a scalar quantity, whereas velocity is a vector
quantity.
Q. 5. Under what condition(s) is the magnitude of average
velocity of an object is equal to its average speed.

Ans. When the velocity of an object changes at uniform rate, then
the magnitude of average velocity is equal to its average
speed.
If u is the initial velocity and v is the final velocity of a
body moving with uniform acceleration, then,
Average speed =Average velocity =
u+v

Q. 6. What does odometer of an automobile measure?
Ans. The odometer measures the instantaneous speed of the
automobile at some particular time.
Q. 7. What does the path of an object look like, when it is in
uniform motion?
Ans. The path of an object will be a straight line, when a graph is
plotted between the distance covered and the time.

the ground station in five minutes. What is the distance of
the spaceship from the ground station? The signal travels

Q. 9. When will you say a body is in (i) uniform acceleration?
(ii) non-uniform acceleration?
Ans. (i) When equal changes in velocity take place in equal
intervals of time, then the acceleration is said to be
uniform.
(ii) When unequal changes in velocity take place in equal
intervals of time, then the acceleration is said to be non-
uniform.

Q. 13. What can you say about the motion of an object, whose
distance-time graph is a straight line parallel to the time
axis.
Ans. The object is stationary.

axis?
Ans. The object is moving with a uniform motion.

Q. 21. An athlete completes one round of a circular track of
diameter 200 m in 40 s. What will be the distance covered
and displacement at the end of 2 minutes and 20 s?
Ans. Diameter of circular track =200 m
Circumference of circular track = 2r ( 2r is equal to
diameter)
=

7
200 m
=
4400
7

Time for completing one round =40 s.
Total time in which athlete moved =2 min 20 s. =140 s.
Now, in 40 s distance covered by the athlete =

In 140 s, distance covered by the athlete =

13
Also in 40 s, the displacement of athlete will be zero as he
returns to the initial point, i.e., if he starts from point A, then
he will return back to the point A in 40 s.
Now, in 40 s, the number of rounds around the track =1.
In 140 s the number of rounds around the track
=
140 1
3
40 2
=
s
s

Now, for each complete round the displacement is zero.
Therefore, for 3 complete rounds the displacement will be
zero. Thus, it is very clear that final displacement will be due
to
1
2
round.
Now, in half round the distance covered will be half of
circumference. In such a situation if the athlete is at point A,
then after half round he will be in the position B. Thus, his
displacement will be the diameter of circular track which is
200 m.
So, displacement after 2 min and 20 s =200 m.

in jogging (a) from A to B (b) B to C?

Q. 28. The speed-time graph of a car is shown in figure below.

(a) Find how far does the car travel in first 4 seconds. Shade
the area on the graph that represents the distance
travelled by the car during this period.
(b) Which part of the graph represents uniform motion of
the car?
Ans. (a) The car travels with a non-uniform speed which is
accelerated motion in nature. The given shaded portion of
the graph represents the distance travelled by the car during
this period.
(b) The straight line portion of the graph represents uniform
motion of the car.

(a) An object with a constant acceleration, but with zero

(b) An object moving in a certain direction with an
acceleration in the perpendicular direction.
Ans. (a) This situation is not possible. It is because, in order to
have constant acceleration, there must be constant change
in velocity. Thus, the velocity of an object cannot be zero.
(b) When a stone tied to a string is whirled in a circular path,
the acceleration acting on it is always at right angles to the
