TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGES COMING TO

SOUTHBOUND VAN WYCK EXPRESSWAY STARTING AUGUST 22

ND

Motorists are advised that the New York State Department of Transportation will change the
traffic pattern in the southbound direction of I-678 (Van Wyck Expressway), as part of an
ongoing $152 million construction project designed to enhance traffic flow and reduce
congestion on the highway. This change in the traffic pattern will go into effect after midnight
on Friday, August 22nd and will remain in place for approximately three weeks.
The traffic pattern change for southbound traffic heading towards the Belt Parkway will begin
after the Van Wyck Expressway merges with the Grand Central Parkway. One lane of traffic
will be to the left of a concrete barrier, and two lanes will be to the right of the barrier. Drivers
wanting to exit the highway at the Hillside Avenue/Jamaica Avenue Exit (Exit 6) should be in
the right lane. All three lanes of traffic will join together again after the Hillside
Avenue/Jamaica Avenue Exit (Exit 6).
Motorists are reminded to exercise caution and anticipate delays. Fines are doubled for speeding
in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or
more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individuals drivers
license. It is imperative that motorists remember to drive carefully through this construction
zone, for their own safety and the safety of workers.
