Abstract: In recent years, the importance of disaster prevention and mitigation become
prominent in a world with frequent natural and social disasters. As the capital of China, it is
particularly necessary for Beijing to devote to disaster prevention and mitigation. In urban
communities, urban parks and green belts could serve not only as leisure place but also as good
refuge space in disasters with large area of open space and buffer zone such as forests and ponds.
This research chooses Beijing Bajiao Community as the subject; by researching and analyzing its
public space layout, we propose possible improvements to ensure the public space can serve as
effective refuge space in disasters.
