Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,
Welcome to 7
th
grade at Otho E. Stuart Middle School! We look forward to an exciting year, full of
learning. We hope to build positive relationships with your student and your family as we work together
throughout the year!

The Language Arts curriculum is based on the Common Core National Standards. We will implement the
Traits Writing Program through Scholastic. Writing will be a main focus with emphasis on the structure
and content, while utilizing the six traits. Our main focus in Reading will be analyzing text, both fiction and
non-fiction.

Materials needed for class:
Students will need the following supplies daily: 1 Binder with divider tabs, loose leaf paper,
pens/pencils, and their planner.
Grading policy
As stated in the student handbook, grades will be based 60% on assessments (such as essays, quizzes,
projects) and 40% on practice (such as classwork and homework).

Late Work
As a school wide policy, assignments turned in on time are eligible for full credit. A late assignment can
be turned in within 24 hours of the due date for credit. Any assignment turned in after the 24-hour
window will receive a 0. Students who are absent on the due date are expected to turn in the
assignment when they return.
Homework assignments
Homework will be assigned on an as-needed basis. Homework may include class-work that students
need more time to work on, may be a project, or may be an assignment designed for practicing concepts
outside of the classroom.

Additional help
Should a student need additional help, I am available after school, excluding Wednesdays, from 2:45-
3:45. If more time is necessary, please schedule this with me.
