Swimming
Do you know that swimming is known as one of mans oldest physical activities?
Early pictographs and sculptures prove that man has swum for at least 2,000 years.
However, little is known about the specific strokes that swimmers used before the 19
th
century,
until the English developed the modern sport of swimming. In 1828, the first pool was opened in
Liverpool. The breaststroke was used during the first contests done in London in 1837.
The most common strokes in swimming are the crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, and
sidestroke. The crawl is also known as freestyle. It is the fastest among the swimming strokes. In
backstroke, the swimmer uses backward circular sweeps of the arms while lying on his back.
Breaststroke, a frog-like kick is done to give power to the swimmer. The sidestroke is the most
appropriate style for rescuing a drowning person.
