Science Lab Rules
Violation of the following rules will result in a verbal warning. Repeated violations of these rules
will result in progressive discipline consisting of temporary removal from lab, temporary removal
from class, and permanent removal from class.
1. Any action that might result in injury. For example, a student not wearing their safety
goggles, and improper use of other lab equipment, (microscopes, balances)
2. Bringing food or drinks into the lab. Chewing gum in lab.
Behavior during lab or class, which creates a risk of harm, will not be tolerated. Some types of
behavior are so serious that students will not be given a warning, but will be immediately
removed from the class. This may also result in an F on the transcript, and an
emergency suspension. The teacher is considered to have superior knowledge regarding safety
in the classroom, and their assessment of a particular situation is considered to be the fnal
word.
The following list should not be considered to be comprehensive as each situation must be
evaluated on its own merits; however, the list may serve as a guide for both students and parents,
in that violation of the following rules may result in the immediate removal from the class;
1. Any activity that jeopardizes the safety of students or staf. Examples might include
pushing, shoving, throwing objects in the lab, pranks of any kind, play fghting
2. Performing unauthorized experiments of a students own design. Examples might include
unauthorized ignition of a fammable material, mixing chemicals contrary to instruction
outlined in an experiment, inappropriate use of a gas source or heating device, and
altering another students experiment.
3. Inappropriate use of chemicals or other lab materials. Examples might include removing
chemicals from the lab, purposefully using the wrong amount of a chemical, touching,
tasting, or snifng anything when told not to.
